The first in a series of Sally Lockhart mysteries. It was a good book but some parts went too slowly. I still enjoyed it though, and I would like to read the rest of the series.

Thanks ArabellaFigg! It arrived this morning and I've read the first 3 chapters - it's all very mysterious. Will finish it over the weekend (have PMed for LillyandLola's address).
I stayed up till midnight to finish this - it was too intriguing to stop!
I love Pullman's writing - he takes things nice and slow, just feeding you little tidbits to keep you interested. And he's not afraid of complicated plots.
Great characters too. And the setting! I really felt like I was there in London - the stereographs sounded great too.
So, long story short, I loved this book - thanks!
Posted this morning to LillyandLola.
Oh, and I have the next book (The Shadow in the North), and will start a ray for that in the next month or so - the adventures of Sally Lockhart will continue. :)

I enjoyed the book very much. I considered it a "light" read, but it was very good. I'll definitely read the next book in the series.
Recieved today, I'm in the middle of reading a book and will get to this one once I have finished that. Thanks to LilyAndLola for sending it out to me.
I really enjoyed this read and was kept gripped till the end. I thought the way that Pullman described London reminded me of Dickens, those dark gothic London streets are always a great setting for a novel.
Looking forward to the next one in the series.
Will get this sent out as soon as I can get to the post office this week.

Found this book waiting for me when I got home from a terrible day at work - it really cheered me up. Thank you Sazzy for sending it to me and ArabellaFigg (I think you're included in one of my rings!) for putting me on the list.
I've nearly finished a book so will be starting this one tomorrow!

I thoroughly enjoyed this little book. A simple style of writing and easy to follow but very readable. I was enthralled and kept dipping into it at every opportunity. As other readers have said, the descriptions of Victorian London are very Dickensian and I really wouldn't have wanted to live there in those days. It kept me on the edge of my seat and I loved all the characters. There's only one I'm still concerned about because we never find out what happened to them! I won't say who because it will spoil the story for the next reader.
I have ReetPetite's address and will be posting it to her in the next couple of days.

It was a nice reading, quite interesting, sometimes a bit exciting. Sometimes seemed a bit too simplistic(?) because the plot wasn't too complicated.
Thank you for sharing!
