This book is a great introduction to Shakespeare and also to some interesting things about the time in which he lived. There isn't much information available on Shakespeare, however others have written about him and there has been heaps of speculation about his life and work. This is a quick read ..... 200 pages!

(slim hardcover, 320gm/11ozs)

I am starting a bookring for this book.

What to do:

1. Journal an entry on receiving the book.
2. Journal an entry when you've read the book.
3. PM the next person on the list for address (You can do this earlier as sometimes contacting a person takes time! Let me know if you haven't heard from them after 10 days.)
4. Make release notes when the book finally leaves you.

Try to read the book within a month (but let me know if it is going to take longer!)

Happy reading! :o)

katrinat(UK/Eu) )

Not very impressed by this, unfortunately. Perhaps Bryson's other work has given me high expectations, but this had little of the wry humour or affection that his other writing has. Also, the book continually re-emphasises the impossibility of knowing any concrete facts about Shakespeare, which by about the fifth repetition makes you want to cry, 'Why write a book about him then?!'. The history that Bryson does provide about the time is fairly dry and not particularly engaging, and it just didn't ring true as an appreciation of a great man and his great works...perhaps a case of wrong author, wrong choice of subject? Perhaps others in the ring will get on with it better than I did - I hope so, anyway!
I will post this out to katrinat this week.

Recieved yesterday, I'm going to aim to get it read before Christmas and sent on it's way (although that may be a challenge in itself with all the marking I have to do in the next week!). Looking forward to it x

Received in the mail this morning, thanks very much. Will read soon.

Edit: Really enjoyed this one. Not as humorous as Bryson's other books but, given the subject matter, it was never intended to be. Very interesting and informative.

Bryson is an entertaining writer, and this is entertaining and interesting, without ever being fall over backwards funny or reveal anything that seems life changing, other than pretty much successfully putting to rest the Bacon theory. Which in itself could be life changing for some, I suppose. A good read on holiday in Mallorca, I'll be sending it on as soon as I can get to the post office (all closed over the Easter break). Thanks so much for making it available.

The book arrived today! Thanks for sharing Carole and thanks for sending it penelopewanders! Looking forward to reading it!

Finally finished this book. Sorry, but it took me 2,5 weeks to read the last 25 pages (shame on me). But life has been soooo very busy and exhausting.

I liked the book although it was not what I expected of Bill Bryson. And now I know for certain, that there are not a lot of hard facts on Shakespeare`s life.

The book is now on its way to NMReader.

Thanks again for sharing!

I am very sorry, but this book seems to have gone lost in the mail. I sent it via media mail and with very bad luck (normally media mail is sent via airmail) it may take up to 3 months to the States. I still hope that it somehow turns up after this long time.....
