Synopsis
Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby she ignores her sister Elinor's warning that her impulsive behaviour leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Meanwhile Elinor, always sensitive to social convention, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment, even from those closest to her. Through their parallel experience of love - and its threatened loss - the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love.

8 out of 10

I approach those books classed as classics with a little trepidation. Often the language is a little strange and hard going, this can lead to it being hard work to get through the pages. The storyline can be a little slow and contain too much romance. I've contended that it's better to watch a film/TV version first so at least I can follow the plot.

So it came as a surprise to find this so easy to read and a great page turner. I really enjoyed reading about the Dashwoods, their cousins, the beauxs. Each character had a different personality, from weak willed John to dastardly Willoughby. I enjoyed this far better than Pride & Prejudice (and I had seen a version of that). My one niggle is Margaret, was there a necessity to mention her at all?

Will be sent to cat soon.

Arrived in today's mail. Thank you molekilby and Sobergirl for sharing.

I see I'm last on the (very short) list. Are there any further plans for this book? Do I need to hurry with it? My daughter would probably like to read it too.

8 out of 10

Finally got around to reading this one. I liked the slow, gentle pace. And it sounds like not much has changed in the boy / girl relationship world.

Thanks cat207! This is the last book in a fabulous bag chock filled with "1001" books! Now to admit my shame: I can't remember if I've read this or not. (This is shame, trust me. My mum & sister have read every single Jane Austen, and Mum has a system of re-reading a Austen novel each year in a seven-ish year cycle. See, I don't even know how many books she's written! Do I deserve to be part of this family, I ask you!)

I know I've seen the beautiful adaptation with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet. And I'm 90% sure I've read it, because I seem to remember I only had one Austen novel unread: Mansfield Park (because even Mum can't deal with Fanny in that, so even though she claims that a poor Jane Austen novel is still a thing of beauty, I'm happy to skip that one).

So I think I've read this. I just can't remember doing so!

I shall offer this one up on the Oz VBB next chance I get.

UPDATE 12 Feb 2009: And into the Oz VBB it goes...

UPDATE 5 April 2009: ...and out it goes, to bookseekerAT. It'll be in the post asap!

Thanks tqd - arrived today. I am trying to make my way through all the Austen novels (inspired by the movie Jane Austen Bookclub) - but first have to work my way through the 6 books, 6 countries, 6 continents reading challenge!
