Reading this and coming to the shocking realisation that many children in my country in this day and age have lives that are so appalling was pivotal in some of my own strategies as a teacher. There were lots of arguments as to whether it was all true or not. That really does not matter; take it from me, there are youngsters in the 21st century suffering in a way we cannot comprehend if we were lucky to have anything approaching a 'normal' life. I used to hear head teachers at the end of the summer term wishing students a happy holiday with no appreciation that even if they appeared not to enjoy it, coming to school daily was a haven. I have faced students with 'no homework' and realised in their lives this was something so very, very trivial. Of course, for many the education was a way out and somehow I had to give them some support to help them succeed academically in their attempt to crawl out of the situation. I had to be aware of the need to tell appropriate people if there was a real immediate danger, to lead to resources wiser than myself if the danger was less imminent. This opened my eyes. It would have been nice to go through life never knowing that some suffered this way!
Every teacher or educator should read this.
