An old friend introduced me to Nelson DeMille's books ages ago, but this is one I never encountered. It was published in 1984: before the Iron Curtain fell, before glasnost, détente, and perestroika, when nuclear war was the scariest possibility, and when the Soviet Union was the world's most dangerous superpower. There are a lot of villains in this book, a few heroes, lots of action, and mysteries that remain mysteries until the last pages. I'm glad we're past this time in history, but history does have a tendency to repeat itself.
