John Irving is one of my favorite story tellers.
Only John Irving could make having a pet bear, sleeping with your sister, and moving to Europe to open a hotel seem like realistic and worth-while, if not normal things to do.
I caught the book on the windshield of my car in a dirt-gravel parking lot near a prehistoric Native American village in Charleston, WV. I really enjoyed reading this novel for many reasons. One of my main appeals was that it was a very engaging story without trying to push or teach or imply values on me. The book showed me a strong family through their history with each other without having to shove the associated 'crap' (aka: forced touchy-feely moments) through my eyes and down my throat. The book portrayed a family and their personal peculiarities without the worry of guilt, shame and stigmas. It was relaxing to be able to enjoy following a family without ‘normal’ social conventions.
