A really beautiful love story. Based on a true story of a gypsy, set against the backdrop of World War Two - a parable of modern day Europe.

Received this today in the mail as a RABCK from my favorite friend across the Atlantic! Thank you, book-man-8, this one looks very good :)
Although I didn't have the chance to read this, I think it's a good book to take with me on my upcoming trip to visit my fiance in Greece. The local BCers in Athens have just started a new OBCZ at Cafe Sonsie near Syntagma Square, so I'm planning to leave it there!
Sorry, I didn't have Internet access while I was in Athens, so I wasn't able to officially "release" this book in Cafe Sonsie. Thanks to okyrhoe for helping me get the word out to the OBCZ hosts ... and I hope this book will find a new reader soon!

Passed by Cafe Sonsie on my way to this month's meeting (a few blocks away at cafe bARTesera), and picked up this book.
Thanks book-man-8!
Thanks book-man-8!
A bittersweet story, and I'm not sure what to make of the novel. I liked the sections through Martin Stransky's half-Englishman's eyes; the parts where Zoli is narrating I felt were too overly dramatic. Not sure if I appreciate that voice, even though it's in character, as she is a poet-singer. Still, there are moments when the struggle of the individual against the onslaught of 'history' are very moving.

Picked up at UBCO in Kelowna, BC Canada. I very much enjoyed the perspective of Gypsy life as it must have felt in those difficult post war years. The writing style is at times confusing as to who is speaking but the fresh phrasing e.g. matching their voices within a blade of grass, was creative. Hope to pass this book along soon.
