This is one of my favorite books. I look for it everytime I go to COAS (the local used book store.)
Thank you for sharing with me overreadersanon!
This is such a beautiful book. Thanks again for sharing it with me.
The descriptions of the two disparate societies, and the pretty hard-core physics make for an interesting combination. Even though 'the future of Earth' is only mentioned in a passing comment, I think this book is still important to reflect our own society and perils we face.
The ending is so uplifting, I have to quote this from the second last page: "A night-blooming flower from some unimaginable world had opened among the dark leaves and was sending out its perfume with patient, unavailing sweetness to attract some unimaginable moth trillions of miles away, in a garden on a world circling another star."

Received today - thanks to RockDg9 for sending!!
I've read a couple of Le Guin's other books, but not this one. I'm looking forward to it, however, based on the high praise it has received so far...

This is a great read - lots of proper science, lots exploration of politics and gender roles, and we also witness the birth of the ansible that is used in 'The Left Hand of Darkness' the Le Guin book I am most familiar with. I agree with RockDg9 that, whilst this book is ostensibly about 2 worlds other than Earth, it does reflect on society today. I spent a lot of time thinking about similarities and differences of both society now and of the time when Le Guin wrote it (1974). I will be sending this on to my secret Santa partner in the next week. She has indicted she likes reading SF, and so I hope she will enjoy this as mcuh as I did.
...and I do like Sci-fi too!
Thank you KLL...good choice. I've read a few by Ursula LeGuin and look forward to reading this one.
Merry Christmas to All!
...and tomorrow I'm off to see The Day the Earth Stood Still! A remake to be sure, but the original was one of my favourites as a child...and I have the book...of course.
