Superintendent Alan Markby and Meredith Mitchell are in desperate need of a holiday - and the Cotswold village of Parsloe St John seems the perfect choice. Their neighbour, retired journalist Wynne Carter, is as convivial as the village itself and, over a glass of blackberry wine, indulges in her latest obsession, Olivia Smeaton, a racy old lady whose life - and death - she is convinced are not all they seem. Markby is more interested in buying Olivia's house than the circumstances of her vacating it, but Meredith is intrigued: by the old lady, the death of a cherished horse and a dusty junk shop run by a white witch.

When another fatality - of a very grisly nature - is discovered, it seems her suspicion is justified. Clearly Olivia isn't the only enigma in Parsloe St John - and her death might be the first of many unless Meredith Mitchell and Alan Markby can make sense of some very secret lives to reach the truth ...

First, let me apologize for having had this book so long; I had no idea. It was buried for quite some time, and then though I’ve seen it I kept passing by. Talk about “don’t judge a book by its cover“ that’s precisely what I was doing. I would look at the cover, and it seemed very mainstream, women’s bookish and so it would go back in the pile . I hadn’t read Ann Granger before, and had completely forgotten him it was a mystery. Duh!

Now that I have, I shall be on the lookout for others 🙂
This was a good tale, deftly woven, and with an assortment of characters likable and not-so-much. I did feel quite sad for Keven. Though I would like to comment on his plight and societal implications, I will refrain. Those who have read the book already will understand, yet I’m not leaving a spoiler for those who haven’t.

I don’t know yet if I shall keep this to offer on bookstogive’s mystery VVB or release it into the wild. I love your idea of extra ‘encouraging ‘ notes within the book, Plum, and may release ( and try myself) in the hopes that may increase my abysmally minuscule catch rate.

Thanks for the fun read, even if I am a few years late !

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

This is not an ordinary book: it's a BookCrossing book! BookCrossing books are world travelers - they like to have adventures and make new friends...and every once in a while they even write home to say what they've been .

Please take a moment to make a journal entry and let this book's previous readers know that it's safe with you.

How and where did you find the book? What did you think of it? What are you going to do with it next?

It's now your book, for you to do with as you please: keep it, pass it to a friend, or maybe even leave it where someone else can find it!

If you've ever wondered where your books go after they leave your hands, join BookCrossing and you may find out: you'll be able to follow the further adventures of your books as new readers make journal entries - sometimes from surprisingly far-flung locations.

(Think of it like Where's George for books: a little like geocaching or a treasure hunt - you can follow a registered book's journey every time someone makes a new entry. Some BookCrossers even leave books *in* geocaches!)
