Extraordinary Murders
About three o'clock this morning, the people living in the Rue Morgue were disturbed by terrible cries which cam from the fourth floor flat of Madame L'Espnaye. After breaking open the street door, which was locked, eight or ten of the neighbours entered, with two policemen. By this time the cries has stopped. As the party rushed up the stairs, two or more rough voices were heared, arguing angrily. The sounds seemed to come from the upper part of the house. As the third floor was reached, these sounds also stopped, and everything was quiet. the party hurried from room to room. They had to force the door of a large back room, which was found locked with the key inside. A terrible sight met their eyes when they entered this room...
