I rec'd this book last week (sorry for the late notice). I'm already 2/3 of the way through it and enjoying it immensely!! This is the best book I've read for quite some time.
I'll do another journal entry when I've finished and ready to send it on to the next person on the list.

Thanks so much, Seferim, for sending this to me!!

Journal Entry 4 by the1stof8 from Renton, Washington USA on Tuesday, June 3, 2003
This is an excellent book ~ best I've read in quite some time. I literally did not want it to end. It's beautifully written, sad yet so very heartwarming. It's about growing up, finding love, learning to trust, the power of women and includes some very interesting facts on bees at the beginning of each chapter. After finishing this book, I found myself wanting to spend a month (or two) at the pink house with the Boatwright sisters and also wanting to know what happened to Lily as she grew up.
This is a book I will definitely recommend to others and I intend to buy myself a copy to read again and again.

Thank you for your great journal entry 1stof8! I hope that you are able to fully discuss the book in your next bookclub meeting!

**PLEASE NOTE--the list order has been changed! I am sorry to do this, but some people have dropped out and others were added, so it needed to be done. Please consult the online list rather than the list in the book for the next person on the ring. Thanks!

Journal Entry 6 by Constant-Reader from Lawrenceville, Georgia USA on Tuesday, June 10, 2003
Received today as part of a bookring. I will get this back out as soon as possible. Thanks!

Journal Entry 7 by Constant-Reader from Lawrenceville, Georgia USA on Saturday, June 28, 2003
I enjoyed this book very much. It's the story of a young girl's search to get to know her long deceased mother and that journey takes her to the home of the Boatwright sisters, one of him is a beekeeper. Three sisters, named May, June & August will steal your heart away as they do Lily's. And then there's Rosaleen who has more courage than a black woman probably should have had at that particular time without getting killed. A good read.

Journal Entry 8 by Geologygirl from Cary, North Carolina USA on Saturday, July 26, 2003
I'm back, and the book was waiting with my mail. I will read it this week and get it off in the mail to the next on the list by Aug 1.

Journal Entry 9 by Geologygirl from Cary, North Carolina USA on Wednesday, August 13, 2003
Finally getting a chance to journal this - it has already been mailed to AmusedbyThis.

Well, it was a sweet story about coming of age, and the context of the time (1964) was interesting. I really liked the bee analogy, and had read the one discussion question ahead of time - asking who was the queen in this hive - so that kept me thinking throughout the book, not only about who was the queen, but what were the hive roles of the other characters too.

There were several characters that I would have wanted to know more about/thought their characters could have been more fleshed out to further the story. Several people had raved about it at work, and the reading group questions at the end were very reflective - but I guess I was waiting for more, so I only gave this a 7.

Thanks for share this book.

This is truly a wonderful book...one of the best that I have read amidst a number of great books that I have been exposed to because of bookcrossing. It is a story of a lonely girl growing up in the South during the beginning of the end of Jim Crow. It is a story of how love conquers all bounderies and how one girl found herself. Thank you Seferim!

Released on Sunday, August 31, 2003 at Controlled Release in Chicago, Illinois USA.

This wonderful book will be on its way today to its next reader...aaratnayake. Enjoy!

I really enjoyed this book. I went through the pages feeling Lily's pain, and wanting her to get all the answers that she was searching for. After only a few pages, I knew this would be a great book.....and the author used such beautiful words to tell it.

"The way those bees flew, not even looking for a flower, just flying for the feel of the wind, split my heart down its seam."

Friends, I got the book. What a pleasant surprise because I completely forgot about it and just about to start a new book. I shall read this first since its a bookring. More later.

March 18 - forgot to add that it came together with a wonderful bookmark.

March 21 - this book went to the F1 Malaysian grandprix today. If you put your ears to the book, you can hear the music of the engines.

March 22 - this book is wonderful. It shows the love between a mother and daughter is strong even though it is not your birth mother. Lily has wonderful mothers in August, Rosaleen and all the Daughters of Mary. Beautifully crafted and the ending was so heartstopping but just right. Thanks for having me in the bookring.

This bookring is taking a little side trip - thanks nikel27! I'll send it back soon - seferim has not been available for a while and did not answer any PMs. Hope it's all right I'm pressing in to this list... Anyway, thanks to seferim too!

Update 6 October 2004:
Sorry that I've kept this book that long - I was overloaded with work so I couldn't read as much as I'd have liked to.

But I just had to complete reading it - I liked it really much! This is the sort of southern novel I appreciate, with characters you love or hate or despise! Good women's fiction, too!

And the bee string of the story reminded me much of my youth, when I used to help my grandfather a lot with his beehives - he became a real passionate bee keeper when he retired.

Tomorrow I'll send the book back to Nikel27 who was so kind as to allow me participating in this wonderful bookring.
