In the "brave new world" universal happiness has been achieved. Control of reproduction, genetic engineering, conditioning and a pleasure drug called "Soma" are the cornerstones of the new society.
But Bernard Marx, who works in the london Hatchery and Conditioning Centre, is unhappy and harbours an unnatural desire for solitude.
During a visit to one of the few remaining reservations, where the old life still continues, he discovers the true meaning of happiness and learns that freedom, truth and suffering are more important than contentment.
First published in 1932, Huxley's vision of the future is extraodinarily prophetic and has lost nothing of its relevance today.
