On the 1001 Books list... I liked this book more than I thought I would. It wasn't as dark as I expected it to be.

I had some preconceived perceptions of this book which were not true. I thought the book was well written but I was surprised with the attitude the main character had of her own suicide attempts - it was almost a game and her attitude was very much - oh well, I didn't kill myself today so try and try again...

1001 Book list to read before you die - one of the better books to date.

It’s a somber book that gets you frustrated with Therapists and Doctors. All in all, I would recommend the book to others.

From Amazon:

Plath was an excellent poet but is known to many for this largely autobiographical novel. The Bell Jar tells the story of a gifted young woman's mental breakdown beginning during a summer internship as a junior editor at a magazine in New York City in the early 1950s. The real Plath committed suicide in 1963 and left behind this scathingly sad, honest and perfectly-written book, which remains one of the best-told tales of a woman's descent into insanity.

I'm offering this book as an int'l bookray. The book is 264 pages and is your typical sized paperback. Please read and pass it to the next person within a month.

Off to LaPitchoune... Happy Reading!

Journal Entry 13 by LaPitchoune from Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Thursday, June 5, 2008
The book arrived today. Thank you!

I started reading immediately. Sylvia Plath writes in an irresistible style. She is unstoppable. She's not trying to reach too high, instead she's playing on human level. Anyone can understand her.

I only just started reading (page 27) but already I found this very contemporary, as was said in the foreword. I mean, think about The Devil Wears Prada, for instance. Couldn't Esther fit right in?

- - -

OK. DONE! This story would make a good reading to young women, also those who are studying English as a foreign language. I like the goth/punk/feminist attitude Esther shows. It's no wonder this is included in the 1001 books.

Posted on June 10. Bon voyage!
