This was one of about 4 copies of this novel that were passed to the Birmingham bookcrossers by the staff of Hudsons Birmingham (where we have our monthly meet ups), that had been them sent to them by the author, who knew of our meetings there. He wanted us to distribute the books through bookcrossing.

From the back cover:

...A compelling tale of love, revenge, prejudice and triumph. Told through the eyes of a narrator, Mieko and tori's story began in Japan during WW2. They were a couple with dreams of marriage and a family untill the fateful day that Mieko was called to serve his country.

This arrived in the post today. It looks very American (whatever I mean by that...) Never judge a book by its cover though. Many thanks for sending it.

I didn't manage to read this as after some pages I realised it wasn't my kind of thing and I have lots of books waiting to be read. It's all packaged up and ready to go though and I'll post sometime next week when I can get to the post office.

This was a nice gentle read, homing in on the reality of a situation that many of us are very well aware of, others, younger, maybe not. The writing was simple and straightforward and the story well was well told. The story of course from a historical viewpoint was fairly predictable, one wanted to shout at Tori to turn back when she was so determined to reach Nagasaki. I enjoyed this simple tale of love and prejudice but the AIDS subplot was just too unbelievable and damaged the whole tenor of the story, I wish that hadn't been there.

Ready to go when I hear from the next in line. Thanks Heaven-Ali for sharing this book.

Gentle, considering the subject, sort of fairy tale. The inner story of Mieko and Tori was compelling and beautifully told. I had more trouble with the outer story of the 'family' witnessing the video, but, at the same time I enjoyed the twist. So, thank you Heaven-Ali for making this book available as a ring.

I have the next address and shall get to the post tomorrow.

Sending to Pinkydinky tomorrow.

I agree about the AIDS subplot. It spoilt the story. Because of its simplicity, I was thinking that this text could be used as an instructive reconciliation text for children in todays ruptured societies. Sadly not, because of the subplot.

I read this in the space of 24 hours. I loved the story of Mieko and Tori. I have to agree that some bits of the Aids plot were unbelievable. The main story is a tale of two people caught up in the horror of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and how they deal with it. One with a heart filled with bitterness and intent on revenge and the other with dignity and forgiveness.

This is a simply told love story which is rather sweet - although not my usual kind of read. I too however found the aids storyline to be utterly ridiculous.

I will be sending on to fifna this week.

I read this a little while ago, and I thought I had already journalled my thoughts on it. Now I have to dig into my memory, and I won't be able to go into much detail. I enjoyed the book very much. The AIDS subplot felt out of place though. The fact that it was unbelievable wasn't so much the problem for me, In don't mind a weird twist to a story, but as this was such a gentle and simple story it would have been better off in another book. Perhaps in a thriller more along the lines of Dan Brown's genre. But otherwise, it was a very enjoyable read.
Thank you for sharing, Heaven-Ali! I'm going to try and extend this ray further.

Thank you so much for sharing this book, Fifna. I found the book very touching. I agree with the AIDS-part, in my opinion it didn't really fit into the story, but it was still a very good read. I hope other readers after me will like it just as much!
