Received Tommy in the mail today! I have one more bookring in front of this, but I'm a quick reader ;) Can't wait to dive into this one, I love Alan Cumming!

Journal Entry 4 by BethanieKay from Melbourne, Florida USA on Monday, October 15, 2007
Yikes. I tried, I really did. I love Alan Cumming the actor ... but I'm not so sure about Alan Cumming the author. As Tommy says:

"I am a sexual deviant. I am a drug user. I am irresponsible and untrustworthy and I should never, never be left unsupervised with a child, let alone allowed to take one home to society's fringes to do God only knows what to it."

I knew this book was bound to be a bit of a wild ride, but I had to throw in the towel after Tommy's cocaine and bum-hole incident with the barmaid in the disabled loo, followed closely by his implication that he does nasty things to himself with carrots.

Sending this along to my sister, Moody-Blue, in Arizona. She's currently in the process of moving from northern to southern AZ, so will ship to her new address in a couple days.

Thanks to ealasaidmae for sharing!

First of all, I have to say that if this was a movie I'm sure I wouldn't have even seen it. I absolutely hate drug use in entertainment media because I'm afraid that kids might see it and think it looks cool. That said, I can admit that I 150% LOVE Queer as Folk (American version) because the guys are totally HOT and I can look past the drugs to enjoy their sweaty, naked bods. I enjoyed this book for the same reason. I pictured Alan Cumming as Tommy and was a happy girl. Is it wrong for a straight girl like me to love Alan? I mean REALLY wrong, 'cause I can live with a little wrong... :)

Now, about that review quote from Time Out New York on the back cover... I have very recently read Ash Wednesday by Ethan Hawke and I disagree that this book is better. I do, however, give both authors huge credit for writing characters that actually have a genuine voice. I've read too many books where the narrator has no personality and sounds like every other. These guys created much more interesting and realistic characters than most and I recommend both books on that account.

Well, what timing....this arrived today. I've just finished a book & was wondering what to read next...so guess what? I'll go start this now...

Journal Entry 9 by wingPlum-crazywing from Brighouse, West Yorkshire United Kingdom on Monday, November 26, 2007
Well I have to say I was wondering what sort of book I'd signed myself up for when I read the other readers comments....a book about a sexual deviant drug user who's a bisexual to boot-not my usual sort of read. But that's what I love about BookCrossing- it's widened my reading!

I knew I was going to enjoy the book early on when I read the about Tommy's relationships with Sadie, Bobby & Finn...the style of the writing just clicked with me (know what I mean?)
OK some bits were a bit alien to me (especially the drug taking!)but then I'm not a bisexual guy so I wasn't expecting to identify with him...

I thought it a good read, couldn't put it down once I'd started it - thanks for sharing it ealasaidmae.

(And dare I say this without getting lynched?....I had never heard of Alan Cumming the actor...sorry...will go google him now......)

Now & then I read a book I like so much I could read the last page- go back to page one and read it all over again. This is one of those books! The characters in Tommy's Tale are like reading about your friends- they feel like friends. In fact there were so many things in this book that rang familiar to me that I would love to be one of the characters- take a bath with Tommy and talk until the water turns ice cold. Incredible characters + great story = one hell of a good book. Thanks again ealasaidmae- Tommy is coming home now!

I was walking my dog along Jeff Davis in New Orleans and I saw a woman drop the book at the base of a statue. I took it home and tried to read it but, unfortunately it really wasn't my thing. I couldn't make it through it. The writing was well done but, I couldn't stay interested.

I think this book community is a really cool idea. I just wish the book I had found was better.

I left it at the North Market in Columbus, Ohio.
