Synopsis
In "Around the World in 80 Days" we join Michael Palin on the first of his great adventures. Following in the footsteps of the fictional Phileas Fogg, he makes real the journey which author Jules Verne imagined more than a century earlier. From the opulence of the "Orient Express" to the lurching progress of an Egyptian camel, from the hot and lively streets of Madras to the lofty heights of a hot-air balloon over Colorado, there is never a dull moment in this hilarious account of a journey full of surprises. "Around the World in 80 Days" is essential reading for every would-be traveller. Writing in his characteristically engaging and witty style, Palin paints a vivid picture of the people and places around him, reinforcing his reputation as one of the world's favourite travel writers.

I remember seeing at least a few episodes of this series on Finnish TV many years ago and I was fascinated by it then.
Imagine someone actually going Around the World in 80 days! Phileas Fogg IS a fictional character, Michael Palin isn't :)

This was a great read, a wonderful adventure, fight against time. I like Palin's way of writing, not going too much into detail about things (on the other hand, on this journey he didn't have much time to study any details about anything LOL).
Armchair (or in my case: sofacorner) travel at its best!

Mailed to em64 tonight

Got the book yesterday. Perfect timing as I needed new bedtime reading :-) The first couple of pages look really promising so I'm pretty sure Palin will be a joyful travel companion.

A truly enjoyable voyage round the world! I really love Palin's writing style; he is not such a whine as Billy Bryson at times (I have read a couple of Bryson's travel books and mostly also enjoyed them). Funny enough, it is a race against time but I felt like not reading it too quickly. Thanks for sharing this book, sobergirl!

I have pm'd bookgeo already so hopefully I can get it moving soon.

Now I have finished the truly enjoyable journey around the world. I had moments when I literally felt I would be making the journey myself too, onboard of these various vessels on the oceans or hurrying forward on railroad tracks seeing the scenery glide by.

I am utterly glad I joined this bookring, this is a great book for a person with continuous travel fever.

I had no idea of Michael Palin before I started to read this book. But I was a great fan of Phileas Fog when I was about five years old. When I saw the picture of the initation seremony at the Date Line some bells started ringing. I must have seen at least one episode of this BBC production.

I never dreamt of traveling around the world. I thought that it is too much flying and rush. Palin's way of doing it gave me second thoughts. Especially liked traveling by train in the U.S. This book is truly presenting an alternative way of traveling. Still I doubt that too many people would actually take a dhow from Dubai to Bombay if not forced to it.

I like Palin's style to write. As a real Briton he is always looking for soccer news and a beer. One charming characteristic of this book is that it was written in 1989. That is not so long time ago. I can remember the world news Palin is referring to. Nevertheless they do not have cell phones and there is no mention of internet. Palin is introduced to a novelty in seafare: satellite navigation system on board.I wonder how is it to travel on cargo ships today. Are there even less opportunies for travelling along?

I am glad that I am waiting for another Michael Palin bookring: Sahara. I will send this book forward as soon as I get Newk's address. That you Sobergirl for sharing the book.

Nearly done. I have address of next person.
A couple of quick notes...I DO remember laser discs. A very good idea, rather short lived and soon superseded.
And Benazir Bhutto was elected during Palin's journey (page 188) and sadly killed while, or just before I was reading the book

Journal Entry 17 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Thursday, February 14, 2008
I enjoyed this book very much. Palin is an engaging man with a droll sense of humour, and he writes very well.
I can barely imagine the logistical exercise involved in organising the trip.
The book could have done with slightly better maps.
Thankyou, thankyou sobergirl.
The book will be posted tomorrow in express post envelope ss3918394

Thanks very much for sharing, Sobergirl. And thanks very much for passing it on, Newk. It arrived yesterday, but I was unable to journal it until just now. I look forward to reading it.

Sorry: just realised how long I've had this. I'll try to finish it over the Easter break. I have started it, but there have been many distractions in my life lately.

Journal Entry 20 by livrecache from Hobart, Tasmania Australia on Sunday, March 23, 2008
I finished this book today, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Palin does write engagingly. I want to see the series now. I wonder if it's still available. AND I'm going to read Jules Verne's original. Luckily, I have a copy that I haven't looked at for years.

I would have liked better and more maps too. The inclusion of the photos was good though.

Thanks for hosting this ring, Sobergirl. Please send me your details and I'll try to have the book on its way home some time this week.
