This book started off really well describing life for the two sisters growing up in South Africa. The series of portraits of family-life, best-friends, school-days etc were descriptive parts and engaging. However, as the book progressed it became too bogged doen in the politics and history of the country at the expense of the characters.

I only got this book a few days ago. My friend was in Inverness and she found it in the picnic area at Keswick Bridge. She started it but could not get into it but thought I would like it. So here it is now in Glasgow and as soon as I have finished my current book I will begin to read it. Am looking forward to it as I like the sound of it from what it says on the back cover.

5 out of 10

I found the first three quarters of the book rather slow and with characters popping in and out I rather lost track of who was who apart from the 2 girls and their immediate family. Found the parts about South African politics at the time rather more interesting. I tried hard with it and stiffled the urge to give up on it and managed to finish it. Not very enjoyable.
