Bought this at a library used book sale a few months ago. I just listened to it a few days ago.

Unabridged on 5 CDs
Read by Christopher Hurt

This was a fascinating book. Even though I'd seen the recent movie with Tom Cruise I was really interested to read the book to see what had inspired the movie and the incredible reaction Orson Welles got when he adapted it for radio.

What really struck me was how intelligent the writing was... for lack of better words. There's absolutely no comparison between this and a modern day action movie. The sheer amount of terror inspired by the carefully described details is staggering. Wells is able to paint a horrible picture of the world being invaded, yes. But more importantly he creates such realistic beings- both in the aliens and the humans. He gets right down into the science and mechanics, the human nature and philosophy, in a way I hadn't expected and, frankly, loved. So much more than a scary story, I felt myself carried away by the language and thought behind it all.

What I also thought was interesting were the references throughout of post-Martian things... so you knew that there would be another day... you just didn't know exactly what or how that would happen. It was chilling, yes, but told so beautifully in ways you just don't see any more in this genre. Definitely an interesting read/listen!

It was an interesting listen. I don't think I would have read the book, but by listening to it while I worked around it flowed. I am glad I can say I "read" the book. Reserving it for either an all CD bookbox or Already Crossed bookbox.

I took this out of the audio bookbox, in a "I ought to read more of the classics" moment.

The thing that really struck me, aside from the skilled writing, was, "Wow, news did travel slow in those days." I guess we are used to anything that happen will be twittered, youtubed, or whatever the whole world over within seconds, so it was almost incredible that aliens could have landed in one part of England (which is a small country) and plenty of people didn't know or believe it for days.
Now this book will hop into whichever the next bookbox is coming my way. Probably Carlissa's?

Arrived home in my bookbox. I'm embarrassed to say that, other than the title sounding familiar, I really don't know anything about this book re: plot. It's going onto Mt. TBR.
