"A couple of ice cubes, first, then the apple that really started it all. A loft apartment in London's East End; cool but doomed, demolition and redevelopment slated for the following week. Ken Nott, devoutly contrarian leftsih shock-jock attending a mid-week wedding lunch, starts dropping stuff off the roof towards the deserted car park a hundred feet below. Ohter guests join in and soon half the contents of the flat are following the fruit towards the pitted tarmac... just as mobiles start to ring, and the apartment's remaining tv is turned on, because apparently a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center..."

Very good book!
At first I found it a bit difficult to get into this book, but the more I read, the more interested I became and more I liked it. The main character Ken wasn't very pleasant man, but his honesty, even to himself, made him sympathetic. A thick book with 485 pages.

Thanks, Chania! I've read a few books by Iain Banks, and some of them I liked very much, others not so much - we'll see how it goes with this one!

The story started a bit slowly and I wondered if I'd manage to finish the book at all. I also find Banks's style with all the rantings he puts in his characters' mouths quite annoying at times. (This book, too, could have been a bit shorter if a few unnecessary rants were left out.) Anyhow, the book got better towards the end and I must say I almost enjoyed it. :) I agree with Chania about Ken not being very pleasant, but somehow I liked him anyway.
