A Christmas gift from Matty. Thanks!
From the back cover:
Bookworm/Assassin
Donald Hogan was a mild-mannered student, a dilettante intellectual, at least that's what everyone was supposed to think he was. But Donald knew otherwise.
He was a spy.
But what Donald didn't know was that in a world overpopulated by the billions - in a society squeezed into hive-living madness by megabrain computers, mass-marketed psychedelics, and eugenics - where everyone was struggling for life... he himself was programmed for death!

What an odd book! It took me forever to get through, because I didn't feel any driving force to the plot. Instead, I just followed many characters, some for longer than others, as they lived in their crazy future world. Some sections of the book made me uncomfortable, like I couldn't tell if the characters' sexism and racism were part of the story. Not sure how to feel about that. But overall, this was a fascinating read, very different, and I can now understand why it won a Hugo award.
I love it when I give a gift and then I end up with it. :) Thanks rednumbertwo!
