I enjoyed the first three books in this series, so when I saw that the fourth one was out we ordered it from Amazon, through BookCrossing. We were still waiting for it several days later when we got a mysterious message saying that as per our instructions it had been returned and re-stocked. So I went to the local Book City and bought a copy in person, along with another Iain Banks book for LotStreetWiz and a copy of Altered Carbon.
Naomi Novik fulfills the promise of her previous books. This book begins in the midst of an air battle, shortly after the end of the previous book. The dragons, Temeraire and the feral troupe from Asia, are battling their way back to England. There they find a mysterious lack of support: no dragon rises to help them against the French dragons. When they land, they find out why: an epizootic has made all the dragons ill and some have died. Eventually a clue leads them on a desperate search for a cure in Africa—where they find yet more surprises.
