"We are in the 1830s, and the Great Game between Great Britain and Russia for power and influence in Asia is underway. Alexander Burns flies the flag for London, having bidden a sad farewell to his love, Bella. From St Petersburg comes the equally enigmatic Vitkevich. Both men are wooing the Amir Dost Mohammed, emperor of the Afghans, on their countries' behalf..."

This was an interesting read, based loosely on historical fact but heavily fictionalised. The machinations of the political powers in those days is captured well; the courtliness of approach masking the underlying deception of the empire builders. With a complicated and extensive cast of characters and covering a lengthy period of time, some concentration is needed to keep up with the tale.
