"...one of the few English novels written for grown-up people." Virginia Woolf
"The most profound, wise and absorbing of English novels...and, above all, thruthful and forgiving about human behaviour." Hermione Lee
I'm know I should be but I really am not sorry about quoting comments written on the back of the book. After all, in some cases, and this is one of them, they are absolutely true. George Eliots Middlemarch is a masterpiece for a novel for all the above mentioned reasons. If books should teach us understanding and compassion for fellow human beings, this really does and without sermons in a subtle way. Her writing is full of life even after over 130 years.
Please, read it and tell me how you liked it.

JonAsp gave me Middlemarch today. I'm a little afraid of the amount of pages in the book but perhaps the fascinating story makes me forget its length. Thank you, JonAsp!
Oops, 6 months is way too long a time to keep a book in the bookshelf (even though Ikea's Billy-bookshelf surely is a cozy place for a book)! I'm putting the book forward any day now.
