From Library Journal
Iyer, author of Video Night in Kathmandu ( LJ 4/1/88), has written a lyrical fable about the Japan of both yesterday and today. He is drawn to Japan, he explains, because "everyone falls in love with what he cannot begin to understand." He begins by traveling to a Kyoto monastery to study Zen Buddhism, which is part of his effort to "get to the urgent truth." This leads him to a friendship with a bourgeois housewife named Sachiko, who is fascinated by the West. Iyer sets out to understand Sachiko and, by extension, Japanese culture. With his light touch for travel writing, Iyer selectively weaves the plaintive love poems and stories of Buddhist priests into his narrative. His sensitive treatment is recommended for most travel collections.

While the book is a little dated (it was published in 1991 and heck I have it for five years...) but there is plenty of observations that is still true today. The author does have keen eyes, and his travel between his circles of expat and Japanese friends provide interesting insights.

One such is the marriage of gaijin men and Japanese women. Foreigners attracted to Japan usually are attracted to the zen and tranquil aspect of the culture, while Japanese women interested in dating foreigners are usually adventurous, so they often find themselves not compatible after a while and the relationships are domed. I never thought of it such way but it certainly is true.

His relationship with Sachiko, somewhat illicit, makes me somewhat uneasy, (and I think the author left out something) and the book is less a travelog than I expect, but overall I enjoyed the read.
