I Know WHY the Caged Bird Sings

I have had this book on my shelf for at least 15 years, it has moved around the world with me in different boxes, but i have never got round to reading it, I have just started it and so far its an extraordinary autobiography, evoking the authors childhood in The American South in the 1930s.
I really enjoyed this book and the way the author writes. Will read some more of her books
After the breakup of Maya Angelou,s parents marriage, she and her brother went to live with their grandmother whose general store was the centre of life for the Black community in Stamps, Arkanas. At eight Maya was raped by her mothers boyfirend and for the next five years became mute. She later moved to California to live with their mother in a world that offered sharp and memorable contrasts to that of Stamps. I am putting this up as a bookring so others can enjoy it too.

Thanks for sharing this book, I enjoyed this wonderful autobiography of Maya Angelou from age 3 to 16. It makes me want to read about the rest of her life, her descriptive style of writing, flashes of humour and attention to detail keeps your interest. It wasn't easy growing up in the South in the 1930's but she survives with a wonderful sense of who she was and went on to live an extraordinary life.
Will post it to fairy-whispers tomorrow.

I just received this book today. Looking at the Post Office stamps, it somehow made it's way to England, Canada and Western Australia before finally reaching me here in Qld!
Thank you very much, and thanks for the beautiful postcard. What a lovely view.
