4 journalers for this copy...

Journal Entry 1 by tqd from Sydney, New South Wales Australia on Tuesday, August 21, 2007

10 out of 10

I read this many years ago now, back in High School. And, of course, I've been completely unable to revisit it ever since, although I have tackled other books by Fitzgerald.

Then the other day I got a nice new copy of The Great Gatsby, thinking that it was about time I re-read it. And then discovered that I already had a copy at home! So I'm bookcrossing this version (which has the identical cover to the book I read in high school, which is not the one on this page... confused yet?).

I'll offer this up on a bookray, as it's a "1001" book.

PARTICIPANTS:

taniazed - Australia
jjlanes - Australia

The ray has stalled here, but another one has taken its place (see below for details). Continuing participants are:
pussinbooks - UK - asked to be skipped
shnedwards - UK
NICNIC2 - UK
ChiBoiler - USA
blackteiwaz - Costa Rica

I adored this book. I would love to write a journal entry that covers all my thoughts about it, but it would end up being an essay - and even then I'd be wanting to add more to it later. It is astonishing how such a short book can have such an impact.

In short, I feel so sad for Gatsby and admiration for Nick. At the beginning I didn't like Nick at all, but by the end of the book he was my favourite character.

I am curious about one thing though, and I'd love to hear everyone else's opinion on it, and that is the question of is Nick Gay or Bi? There has apparently been debate over this, with no real answer to my knowledge. There are a few words and phrases dropped here and there throughout the book that hint toward it, but the counter argument to that is that friendships were different in that day and age or it is the writing itself that is different and is supposed to mean something quite different. However, there is one passage quite early on in the book - you should know which it is when you get to it - that I can't see how anyone could argue that something hadn't happened between Nick and another male character. I can't see the point in adding those few sentences as they just stick out like a sore thumb.

Thanks so much for sending this book out tqd!

Yay! My first 1001 book finished! Only 1000 books to go! hehe

Well, this book does seem to have gone missing! No sign from jjlanes for a while, I do hope all is well.

In the meantime, the wonderful zzz has offered up another copy to keep this ray going! Further journal entries can be found here! Thank you, zzz!

jjlanes, if you do reappear (and I hope you do!), please consider this copy of the book yours to do with as you like. I hope you read it (and enjoy it), but afterwards, please wild release it or whatever takes your fancy.

UPDATE 15 July 2008: Change of plan, the ray has now been resurrected by FuShMuSh! Thanks! The new ray can be found here

Journal Entry 8 by lostbookisland on Monday, July 07, 2008

This book has not been rated.

This book has washed ashore at the Lost Book Island after not being heard from for many months. This new arrival will be shown to a room and be allowed a bit of rest before being introduced to the many fun things to do here at the island.

All around there are books sipping cool drinks under shady palms while other books participate in a wide variety of beach sports. There is plenty of sand, surf and sun here for all of the lost and wayward books to enjoy.

It is hoped that very soon a new journal entry will come to rescue this book from the island and send it back out into the BookCrossing world so that it may continue on its journey. It is hoped that the new journal entry will tell all the interested parties where this book has been this long time and where it will be traveling to next.
