10 out of 10

In the summer if 1914 Albert was growing up on his father's farm in Devon with a young horse he called Joey. In Germany Friedrich was at work in his butcher's shop. In France little Emilie played with her brothers in their orchard. But the clouds of war were on the horizon, and the armies gathered, drawing them all into a nightmare from which there was no escape.

This is the deeply moving story of Joey, the people whose lives he touches, and their struggle for survival in the blasted wilderness of the Western Front.

8 out of 10

What a great little book. I am so into juvenile and young adult fiction right now - it takes me back..... This book was the epitome of the junior fiction novels I used to read in my early teens.

The story was so 'possible' and it gave the reader (me) a different set of victims and heroes to consider in WWII. It was maybe a little dated in it's character stereotypes, but certainly not too dated that it wouldn't still be enjoyed by pre-teens or teenagers of today.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It is now ready to head off again to klaradyn, I hope everyone else enjoys it as much as I did.

I thoroughly enjoyed this charming story, and I must admit that I cried at various points in the story! Haven't read other children's or YA fiction set in this period before.

The book was sent on to katrinat this morning, using airmail.

9 out of 10

I recieved this book 2 days ago and I have already read it all, and will be sending it on it's way asap.
I really enjoyed the book, which although obviously a childs book was able to stike up emotions and I was really captured by the charcaters in the novel. A great little read.
If you loved this book you should try Private Peaceful by the same author, I loved it and I'm now reading it with a class of 11 yr olds and they are thoroughly enjoying it.

Safely received, thanks.

Smurphie - thanks for the card and bookmark, they're beautiful... though they have made my "places to visit" wishlist longer!

10 out of 10

Just read this lovely little book this morning - it's similar to a book I read a while back, set in the Prussian war I think, about a horse called 'Jumper'. However, this was much more engaging and moving, and yes, I did cry!

Will be passing this on to AgnesXNitt asap.

Received by hand from Vamperstein8782 when we went for our now yearly treat of a proper manicure!
Now sporting 'Cinderella Red' nails - well it *is* Christmas don't you know - I look forward to reading this one. I've just read 'Private Peaceful' by the same author, who I now believe is the Children's Laurette (or something spelt a bit like that!).
Thanks for handing on Vamperstein (my ever faithful beta reader!) and to Smurphie for the very cool bookmark and for hosting this ring.
To Smurphie and other previous BXing loggers - Happy Christmas!

9 out of 10

I know this is a book written for Children, but I really did enjoy this story. I had a quick snuffle in the obligatory tissue when first the Captain and then his Equine Brother in Arms died, but the author writes moments of joy into this story that makes it an uplifting tale at the end.
In reality, of course, most of the horses that were requisitioned by the Army for 'the duration' of WW1 were sold off in the country they had fought in and left to an uncertain and often short-lived fate. A fine thank you for their silent service to their country. A certain Army officer's wife - Mrs Brooke - saw the terrible conditions ex-Army Horses, Donkeys and Mules were surviving in when she and her husband were posted to Eqypt in the 1920's and promptly set up the Brooke Charity to help them. The charity exists to this day, helping animals in suffering and educating their owners. For more information about the fate of the animals left behind - I can recommend Jilly Cooper's excellent book - 'Animals In War'.
Thanks again Smurphie, I'll get this one back to you soonest!
