Johan Borgen, Norway's most distinguished modern novelist, died in 1979 and is best known in Britain for 'The Red Mist', published in English in 1973. However 'Lillelord' - which first appeared in 1955, is recognised as his major literary achievement. It is a modern novel of development which paralells Borgen's own time and is partially autobiographical.

'Lillelord' is set in turn-of-the-century Oslo, in a middle class social setting that is familiar to us from the novels of Ibsen. It is the first part of a trilogy which introduces Wilfred Sagen as a child - the impeccably behaved 'lillelord' ('good boy') of a comfortable family, but seen in a more sinister light by his teachers and the children of the Oslo streets. Wilfred is aware of a split in his own personality, and his intellectual development is the central theme to this novel.
