8 out of 10

Hmmm. I think I liked it.

It had so many similarities to Fight Club in both style and content that it was hard NOT to like it.

But it's not Fight Club.

It has quite a few laugh-out-loud moments, and some steamy scenes.

But I found the most appealing aspect of the book is the study of old-age, dementia, mental illness, and mother-son relationships and the need to feel loved.

Chuck Palahniuk has a real knack for treating heavy issues, such as addiction, lightly, but without trivializing them. He seems to have a deep knowledge of mental health issues and explores them in a very entertaining, yet sensitive way.

Hmmm... On second thought, maybe I'll give this book an "8" instead of a "7".

I will be sending this to RealBookWorm, and look forward to hearing her views.

enjoy!

Just received this today. My son grabbed it and I had to wrestle with him to get it back so I could get the number from it to make this journal entry. I'll definitely be reading it AFTER he reads it. :)

Thanks joelman!

Very wierd. This reminded me alot of Fake, Liar, Cheat by Todd Goldberg in its recklessness of the main character. The ending was also left up in the air in a similar way as well as the Lullaby. I did enjoy the novel though and it was a fascinating look into one guy's mind. Off to libertine next.

Well, I was son over by Fight Club and Diary wasn't too bad. Since reading those, I have been trying to get a hold of his books for a while. (I work in a public library and despite this, I have not been too successful in getting my hands on another novel by him.)
So I was very excited when cestmoi rabcked me this one off my WishList. :)
Thanks to her and to joelman for buying it in the first place and sharing it. :)

I have to agree, I see the similarities between this and Fight Club - the style of writing and the way the main character narrates.
Lots of very serious subjects, crazed characters, black humour - what I love about Chuck P's stuff.

This book will soon be off to MrMustard.

First up, sorry for not registering this as soon as it arrived! Anyway, it got here safely, so thanks to libertine101.

I read it while on holiday last week and, as with all the Chuck Palahniuk novels I've read so far, I thoroughly enjoyed it. As always, there are some interesting ideas and some well defined, if unsympathetic, characters. It's both funny and horrifying, and consistently absorbing. Probably better than 'Fight Club', but not as good as 'Lullaby'.

Not one for the squeamish this: plenty of swearing, lots of explicit sex and some gory medical detail. There's actually fairly little excretion/egestion (you know what I want to say, but I'd never be able to bring this page up at work were I to be more succinct) for a book of this sort so when it does appear, accompanied by violence, towards the end, it's about the only thing left to gross-out about. However, at least people are not deliberately sadistic and that makes it far easier to read and laugh at than something like American Psycho. So not my usual sort of book.

However Victor's relationship with his mother and the other inmates of her care home is fascinating and the combination of current life and flashbacks, although now frequently used, works well. I love the idea of hypnotising people in order to pimp the (literally) dead famous, and was really touched by the rocks sub-plot. I also seem to be going through a phase of books which have a particular repeated quirk in the writing. Catch-pharase is not the right word, but it's the first that comes to mind ;o)
