The Blurb:
For sixty years, Jewish refugees and their descendants have prospered in the Federal District of Sitka, a "temporary" safe haven created in the wake of revelations of the Holocaust and the shocking 1948 collapse fo the fledgling state of Israel. Proud, grateful, and longing to be American, the Jews of the Sitka District have created their own little world in the Alaskan panhandle, a vibrant, gritty, soulful, and complex frontier city that moves to the music of Yiddish. For sixty years they have been left alone, neglected and half-forgotten in a backwater of history. Now the District is set to revert to Alaskan control, and their dream is coming to an end: once again the tides of history threaten to sweep them up and carry them off into the unknown.

A detective story! Not what I had expected, although no less enjoyable. I really like Chabon's writing, but have to say about this book, that if you have no knowledge of Judaism or Yiddish expressions, the book will be very difficult. A glossary might have been a good idea for non-yids! Luckily for me, my grandparents both spoke Yiddish and so I made out okay.

Sent to Ilios via air mail!
I apologize for the delay in journaling this book. It arrived last week, but I have been swamped at work and didn't have a chance to do some bookcrossing. I am looking forward to reading this, as I heard good this about this book. Thanks again for sharing. I will update this entry once I am done.
UPDATE 10/28/07
This was really an interesting book. The premise of the novel was unusual and thought-provoking, and it allowed the author to create a parallel universe so close to ours that it makes the story compelling and believable. The characters were well-developed and compelling (I loved Bina and her wonderful bag :o). I was a little bit lost with the vocabulary and I longed for a glossary at some point. I will most definitely be on the lookout for other books from this author. Thanks again for sharing this!
UPDATE 12/2/07
I apologize for the delay in posting this. It's now on its way to mellonhead!
UPDATE 1/07/08
I just sent a PM to mellonhead to check on this book. I hope it arrived safely and the delay in journaling is because mellonhead is still recuperating fromthe crazyness of the holidays or was out of town. :o)

on its way! Happy Holidays!
I did get this book just during the holiday season! I put it aside and completely forgot about it. I'm so sorry. I'm very excited to read it. I'm in the middle of another book and then it's next. Thank you for the reminder Ilios!
no problem, mellonhead! I am just glad it got to you. Enjoy!
tobyrus asked to be skipped, I've pmd the next in the ring. I couldn't get into this book. I know I'd like it if I could hang in there and keep reading it, but I just can't make myself do it. I don't even have the excuse of being a goy. Oy!
