I received this book from Allen and Unwin to review. This was an enjoyable read and I read it in one day, ending in tears!

The Night of the Burning is a moving story of two sisters, Devorah and Nechama Lehrman, two young polish, Jewish, girls as their torturous path leads them to a new life in South Africa. The story swaps between their current time and the past as it is told through Devorah’s memories.

The story is a fictional story of real people and real events with the gaps filled in. The author is a daughter-in-law to Devorah. I would recommend this book for good, thirteen year old readers to adults.

Received a couple of weeks ago, and left in my office while I was travelling for work. I'll read it before I leave, but unsure if I'll post it sea mail from here or take it to the UK and post it. Depends on timing and how much I already have in my bags! ;)

Journal Entry 12 by Mochagirl from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Saturday, November 10, 2007
Wow, what sadness!

I kept expecting something else horrible to happen :(

Apologies for the delay: I got back to Oxford a couple of weeks ago, and I've tried a few times to get to the PO, but it was always extremely crowded. However, I now know that about 5pm on a Saturday is a good time to go! ;)

It was a moving story. I admit I cried a lot reading this book (I am pregnant so I'm blaming it on my hormones) and it helped me understand a little bit better other parts of Jewish history I was not aware of.
I also think it is a crime to separate siblings for adoption or fostering. Thanks for sharing!

How to handle that ?

Very sad at the begining but I think that if the poor girls were to stay in Poland it would be worst. In a matter of fact all depends on the personal nature. The little one considers the half-full glass.

Reading this book after "The Grandmothers" I'm being very accurate about sickness aboard the steamers from England to Cape Town. ;)

I didn't know that there was a large jewish community in south africa. It's interesting reading about the pogroms, and about the orphanage in South Africa, where 200 orphans from Poland were hosted.
The story is a little sad, though and it takes a long time to Devorah to be grateful for her new life.

What a heartbreaking story. I don't know if "enjoy" is the right word, but I enjoyed reading this book. I've always found the history of the Jewish diaspora a fascinating subject. Thanks for sharing this one, frangipani08. I've contacted the next person and will send the book on as soon as I get an address.
