I was not a fan of Science Fiction until a friend of mine introduced me to the Douglas Adams Hitchhiker's 'trilogy' (which is actually 5 books :-) ).
"The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" is the first book of this 'trilogy' and it's about two friends that live on earth, Arthur Dent and Ford Perfect (who is actually an alien). These two characters survived the destruction of Earth by hitchiking a lift with the same spaceship that destroyed the planet. Then begins a journey through the galaxy full of odd and absurd adventures.
This book is very, very funny and and I couldn't stop reading it for a minute. It's very original and definitely unlike any other book I have read so far.

Journal Entry 6 by Gyd from Barcelona, Barcelona Spain on Monday, March 17, 2003

And many thanks for the fjords, Slartibartfast!!!

Journal Entry 7 by aidan on Thursday, March 20, 2003
Received this book from Gyd, I'll try to be as quick as you in reading it and passing it along !
Thanks,
Aidan

Journal Entry 8 by aidan on Tuesday, March 25, 2003
Very funny and enjoyable, reminds me of Tom Robbins novels. Can't wait to know what the big question is, and what you eat at the Restaurant at the End of the World! But most of all, I wonder if Floorr is going to organize bookrings for the remaining books of the serie !!
(I'm sending this to Solimano of course !)

Journal Entry 9 by solimano from Firenze, Toscana Italy on Monday, March 31, 2003
It's mine! It's mine! (just for a little time....).

Journal Entry 10 by solimano from Firenze, Toscana Italy on Tuesday, April 1, 2003
"But the story of this terrible stupid Thursday, the story of its extraordinary consequences, and the story of how these consequences are inextricably intertwined with this remarkable book begins very simply. It begins with a house."
I had already read the Guide in Italian; and I loved it.
Now, in English, I think it is more and more spectacular spectacular.
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is an 'hellzapoppin' that catches you. When you begin to read it you must end it (all of it....).
Its journey goes on towards Rhenium3 - Czech Republic.

Journal Entry 11 by Rhenium3 from Skellefteå, Västerbotten Sweden on Monday, April 7, 2003
Wow, this book is great so far! And it came from Italy which makes it so much cooler. Excellent read though....Love it, and I just started it. I'll write again when I send it off to Germany!

Journal Entry 12 by Herrundmeyer from Heilbronn, Baden-Württemberg Germany on Saturday, April 12, 2003
Received this book today and will start as soon as possible. I know all five parts of the trilogy already, but I hadn't read them in English. TBR.

Journal Entry 13 by Herrundmeyer from Heilbronn, Baden-Württemberg Germany on Monday, April 14, 2003
Great! The late Mr Adams is one of the few SF authors that can really keep me reading (as well as Terry Pratchett and Robert Rankin) - perhaps because he does not take his own story seriously. I recommend this one and its 4 successors to everybody. I will not join the following rings though, because I've read them all in German, and I have so many other books to read.

Released on Monday, April 14, 2003 at mailed to a fellow bookcrosser in Gelsenkirchen, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany.

I'm sending it to the next in line, lostnomad in the Netherlands, who might not remember joining the ring or might not expect the book. The address was included in the book, so I need not PM and ask for it. Kind of surprising to get the book in the mail without prior notice.

Journal Entry 15 by lostnomad on Monday, April 21, 2003
Just came back from a long trip.. actually even hitchhicked part of the way :)
It was a great, great welcome-home to find this long awaited book here but am deadtired so... please forgive me for not writing more right now..

Anyway.. Thanx Gyd, Aidan, Solimano, Rhenium3, Herrundmeyer and of course, at the very top of this food(for-thought)chain, thank you very much Florabela!

Read you later!
Greetings and goodnight,
lostnomad

Journal Entry 16 by lostnomad on Monday, April 28, 2003
What can i say, this book has it all; great wordsmith art, lotz of humour, a two-digit answer to THE question and a super-intelligent shade of the colour blue! hell, its even better then Vogon poetry!

Just not much fiction to the science i would say, computers with irritating emotions? Come on, thats nothing new since MS Windows was introduced.

Anyway, i had a great read, tomorrow the book will continue its epic journey, this time to England..
Greetings,
Tom

Journal Entry 17 by Mojorisin2 from Stevenage, Hertfordshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, May 7, 2003

There was a package waiting in my mailbox yesterday ... a book from England???? I could not remember asking anyone in England for a book recently. What a happy surprise to find HHGG inside! Yay, it's a long weekend here in Canada (we are celebrating queen Victoria's birthday) and I know what I will be doing with the free time :-) Thanks guys!

Journal Entry 20 by lady-sybil from Canberra, Australian Capital Territory Australia on Thursday, May 22, 2003
That was good! Enough improbable fun to last me for a while :-) Eddie reminds me of the irritating paperclip office assistant in MSOffice ... I'm sure at least one of the MS programmers is a H2G2 fan, it cannot be a coincidence ;-)

By the way, check out the Earth edition of the Hitchhiker's guide at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/ (almost) everything you wanted to know about Life, the Universe and Everything.

05/25/03: Sent to Angelgirl5579 ... SURPRISE! :-)

Journal Entry 22 by Agrace from Frisco, Texas USA on Tuesday, October 14, 2003
Hey! It finally got here!!! I'll put down the book I started yesterday so this one won't be delayed any longer.
I love all the souvenirs it has collected so far!

Journal Entry 23 by Agrace from Frisco, Texas USA on Tuesday, October 28, 2003
I'm not a huge science-fiction fan, but I did enjoy the off-beat humor of this book. I found the explanation as to why humans talk so much enlightening ;)

Sorry that the book has been here as long as it has. Car trouble has kept me from getting it to the post office, but it is on it's way today!

Journal Entry 24 by TexasWren from Hillsboro, Texas USA on Wednesday, November 5, 2003
I received the book today, although I haven't been to the post office in several days, so I'm not sure when it actually arrived.
Anyway, I read it in the car and am already hooked. I keep bogging down in the reading though, so it's not going as fast as I would expect. Why is it bogging down? Well, first because I keep having to stop and say, "Man, how did he think of that"!, and second, I keep having to stop and read the funny parts aloud to hubby, which of course means I have to stop and explain what's currently happening, so that he can see the humor in it! I should just give up and read it aloud to us! ;-)
I love the way this book has traveled, and got such a kick out of hearing "I read it in Italian/German" Wow!

I also like the flap label in front, and may borrow the idea for some of my special books.
Thank you for sharing.

Journal Entry 25 by TexasWren from Hillsboro, Texas USA on Sunday, November 9, 2003
I loved this book, and for the first time, I feel like an insider! Am I one of the first to figure out where Babel Fish and Google got their names?
Truthfully, I didn't expect to care for this book, and ended up a huge fan!! Thank you so much for allowing me to join this cool group!
I will mail it to the next person as soon as I get her addy. I'll even try to add something to the folder.

Journal Entry 26 by anabanana from Pasadena, California USA on Tuesday, November 18, 2003
Received this book today (thanks TexasWren!) and can't wait to read it! It is such fun to see everything that people have included with it on its journey. I will journal again when I finish it.

Journal Entry 27 by anabanana from Pasadena, California USA on Friday, November 21, 2003
Thank you to all of you who kept this ring going. I, too, found myself rereading sections and trying to imagine how Adams came up with a lot of it. It was enjoyable to read a story that was tongue in cheek and so intelligent.
"Who was that?" asked Arthur.
"Who - the man with the five heads and the elderberry bush full of kippers?"
"Yes."
"I don't know. Just someone."
"Ah."

Mailed Nov. 29 to Bookcookie39. Enjoy!

Journal Entry 28 by bookcookie39 from Simi Valley, California USA on Sunday, December 7, 2003
I received this in the mail a couple of days ago (thanks, anabanana!) but haven't had a chance to journal it until now - I apologize! This book's an old favorite of mine and I'm looking forward to reading it again (it's next after I finish my current read). Thanks to fflloorr for organizing this bookring!

Journal Entry 29 by bookcookie39 from Simi Valley, California USA on Saturday, February 21, 2004
I'm sorry to have held up this bookring for so long - the timimg of the book's arrival unfortunately conflicted with other things. However, I loved getting a chance to read this again - it's been a long time since I last read it and I don't know where my old copy has gone. I still found it as sharp and funny as ever (maybe even more so).

I'll be sending this on to blue183 in New Zealand as soon as i get confirmation of the mailing address. Thanks to florbela for starting this bookring and to everyone else who joined in!

Journal Entry 30 by Blue183 from Brisbane, Queensland Australia on Sunday, February 29, 2004
Received this in the mail today. It was a surprise I wasn't expecting any mail. This book has certainly traveled quite a way and pick up some nice souvenirs along the way. I will try and read this asap and add a few extras. Thanks for the chance to read this :)

Update: April 26th 2004

Sorry that I have kept this for so long. Life gets busy. I have sent this little book to Hawkette today, so it should be there in about a week. Thanks for the chance to read this I enjoyed it. It took a little while to get into it, but it was good, well worth a read. Sorry again for the delay.

Journal Entry 31 by Hawkette from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Thursday, April 29, 2004
Arrived today in the mail.
Looking forward to this one - can you believe I haven't read this series yet - disgraceful!!

Journal Entry 32 by Hawkette from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Saturday, July 3, 2004
Ahhhhhh, 42! Of course!!
This was quite funny, although more grin causing than laugh out loud.

Loved the coincidences, the irony, and the views of us mere Earthmen.

One passage I want to remember...
''Never again,' cried the man, 'never again will we wake up in the morning and think: Who am I? What is my purpose in life? Does it really, cosmically speaking, matter if I don't get up and go to work?...' (p.149)

Can't wait to read the others. I have been collecting them, and will send them out of rays if any one is interested. PM me.

This volume is traveling back to it's originator after being away for such a long time!

Journal Entry 33 by fflloorr on Tuesday, July 20, 2004

Gosh, I really wasn't expecting this... :)
I don't really like science fiction but was very curious to read this. And it was a surprise! It made me smile, and it made me wish I could make a travel through the galaxy!
I believe I'll have to read the other 4 books of the trilogy... :)

Thanks so much, fflloorr, and sorry for taking so long... Another bookring and my holidays (great holidays!!) got in the middle :)

Another BCer infiltrated himself in the bookring... He's done and it's going now to Moimeme!!

Journal Entry 38 by wingAnonymousFinderwing on Monday, September 20, 2004
I’m a hitchhiker of this book ring, and for this lift I thank you all!

After reading the first chapter of this book I had to read the rest. Actually I’ve read the first chapter of this book, “stolen” from Fantasma while she was looking outside of the plane window ;) somewhere over Spain or France, only to entertain my self on a boring “plane ride”.

The “guide” is very funny, and now the question is: How can I get to “The Restaurant at the end of the Universe”?
