Scotland Yard's Superintendent Richard Jury - suffering ennui and at more-than-usual odds with superior officer A.E. Racer - is sole witness to the quiet killing of music-critic Roger Healy by his wife Nell, in the lounge of the Old Silent inn. Nell is withdrawn, enigmatic, and the richest member of Yorkshire's Citrine family - father Charles and his sister Irene - a family involved eight years before in another tragedy when Billy, Roger's son from a first marriage, and his best friend, Toby Holt, were kidnapped and held for ransom. On police advice, Nell chose not to pay. Billy was never seen again. Weeks later, Toby's body was identified by his adopted uncle Owen - victim of a fatal accident, it seemed. Now, near the cheerless Citrine country house is Weaver Hall, where Jury's old friend Melrose Plant is staying for a few days; and Ann Denholme, who runs the place, is aunt to self-sufficient 11-year-old Abby Cable, who lives in the barn with dog Stranger and a collection of pop-star posters. Jury, intrigued though officially out of his jurisdiction, talks to the Citrines, Nell included; to Abby; and to the eccentric boarders at Weaver Hall, trying to find the motive behind Nell's black deed. But the murder of Ann Denholme only deepens the puzzle - until Jury's path leads inexorably to a pulse-quickening climax at a mega-rock-group concert in a packed London hall; to more bloody mayhem; and, finally, to some answers. . . . . .Grimes pursues many seductive byways - Greek mythology; the world of jazz and rock; the skills of sheepherding dogs; designer clothes; the Orient Express. She writes, as always, with charm, authority and ironic wit...a class act. (Kirkus Reviews)

This arrived safely yesterday. Thank you so much Chich for thinking of me. It may take me a little while to get to this one as I am one of those people who likes to read a series in order! But never fear, it will be read, journalled and passed on.

5 out of 10

Finally I have got to this one. I'm reading them in order which is why it has taken me ages. I'm with Chich on this one. I didn't enjoy it as much as some of the others. I think the ones I like less are those where Grimes makes everything so long and complicated that you begin to lose sight of the plot. This would have been better kept much simpler, as the main story was good, just too much dead wood in the way. The usual slightly odd references which are nearly correct appear (Guy Fawkes Day?!, thinking people dress up for it and not knowing that it happens in November. You'll have to read the book to see what I mean.)
Will release soon.

During the Edinburgh Festival 2010 I wild released 50 books around various venues to 'celebrate' my birthday. I got 9 'catches' which I thought was pretty good going.

It proved to be quite addictive, so for the 6th year in a row I thought I'd do it again. Collecting 50 books to release is quite a challenge, so not all the books are ones that I've read, if they are then my journal entry will be somewhere above.

Expect releases to take place between 1st August 2015 and 1st September 2015.

Thank you for picking up this book. I hope you enjoy reading it & look forward to reading your journal entry & those that follow. You don't have to join to journal (you can do that anonymously) but it's free, so if you're a bookworm that likes to pass on books, why not join in.

I will try & update these release notes with the actual details ASAP after release and will tweet their location as I go (@cassandra2020)

Released as part of my annual challenge to release 50 books during the Edinburgh Festival - if you've picked this book up I hope you enjoy it!
