There were some funny moments in the story. At first I was less than impressed by the main character. Charlie Asher a self-proclaimed beta male is the central character of the story. I found him a little whiney and indecisive. That said, it's those very characteristics that put him in his predicament.
Charlie's wife dies shortly after giving birth to their first child. Possibly as a result of witnessing the agent of death taking her soul or simply because this is his fate Charlie becomes an agent of death.
