Amazon Review
What Is "Practical Magic"?, 17 Aug 2005
By Jennifer Richards (Illinois, USA) - See all my reviews

Practical Magic is one of the best novels I have ever read. This is not the steriotyped "Harry Potter" nonsense that people are used to reading. Too many children's books and fantasy movies have portrayed magic and witchcraft in a way that gives people the wrong impressions and ideas. A lot of movies use what J.R.R. Tolkien once referred to as "unnecessary magic". Practical Magic is very different. There is no wand waving or flying broomsticks. The only type of magic that we find in this novel is limited, but it is also much more dangerous. The type of magic that I am referring to is difficult to describe. You have to read the book, then you will understand it better. The Aunts in the book do use some of the magic that is used in Wicca. Love and Nature play a significant role and are both very powerful. Actually, "magic" is not the right word to use. Virtue and Power is a more accurate way of describing what we usually referre to as "magic". Love is a virtue that is taken advantage of by the main characters in this book. Nature has a power that is beyond our control, but we do have the power to see it working and maybe to help it a little. As for magic itself, "Enchantment" is the more appropriate word to use (see J.R.R. Tolkien's essay On Fairy-Stories). When you read this novel you will find that it appears to be about ordinary people and ordinary life. If you look more closely you will find that the ordinariness is contrasted with things that are not ordinary. These are just some of the things that make Practical Magic so unique. This is an excellent novel for those people who want to read something that doesn't portray magic and witchcraft as childish "hocus pocus" nonsense.
