Man Descending
2 journalers for this copy...
this was a magnificent selection of short stories... each so very different than the one preceding it. my favorites were 'reunion' and 'going to russia' for the emotion they evoked, but honestly, each story was moving in its own way. i admire vanderhaeghe's diverse abilities, as he was able to create many characters without repeating himself or seeming to fall into a pattern of relying on a certain plot or theme. i'm looking forward to reading more of his works.
this book is currently on it''s way to a bookcrosser in finland...
happy travelling, book!

Journal Entry 3 by Tarna from Tampere, Pirkanmaa / Birkaland Finland on Wednesday, September 19, 2007
Man Descending arrived today. I love short stories, they are much harder to write than novels, I think.
I'm afraid it has to stay with me for quite a while, though, since I've got so much to read before this one.
The cover is just delicious.
Thanks, chelseanadine! I really do appreciate this.

Winner of the Governor General’s Award for Fiction in 1983 and, according to Wikipedia, the United Kingdom’s Faber Prize.
I’m amazed by the empathy Guy Vanderhaeghe expresses for his protagonists, no matter what they’re like. And they aren’t always that nice.
I like the way Vanderhaeghe writes. He clearly is a story-teller but he also gives his readers something to ponder. The stories in Man Descending are short and pithy, yet there is so much in them.
I liked almost every single one. Some of them, however, I liked more than others. My least favourite one was, I guess, Sam, Soren, and Ed, even though the narrator-protagonist Ed was already an old acquaintance from Se menee ohi, Finnish translation of My Present Age, let alone the title story Man Descending. Among my favourites, on the other hand, were the opening story The Watcher, Dancing Bear, Drummer, and Cages. I was quite impressed by the two last-mentioned; I couldn’t help thinking what would happen when the Simpson boys grew up. I actually created a sequel to these two short stories. ;-) And I never ever do that! I am surprised that it was Ed whose story Vanderhaeghe decided to expand into a novel, not the Simpsons. (I did like the novel, though.) On second thought, perhaps Vanderhaeghe has written more about the Simpson brothers — or, hopefully, maybe he will someday.
I really love this book.
Thanks for this fantastic reading experience, chelseanadine! (I’ve tried to contact you, btw. but perhaps my PM’s didn’t come through. If you’re still interested in BookCrossing and the Moomins, do PM me, please.)
