Synopsis
John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they bought home Marley, a wiggly yellow fur ball of a puppy. Life would never be the same. Marley quickly grew into a barrelling, ninety-seven pound steamroller of a Labrador retriever, a dog like no other. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, flung drool on guests, stole women's undergarments, and ate nearly everything he could get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewelery. Obedience school did no good - Marley was expelled. And yet, Marley's heart was pure. Just as he joyfully refused any limits on his behaviour, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley shared the couple's joy at their first pregnancy, and their heartbreak over the miscarriage. He was there when babies finally arrived and when the screams of a seventeen-year-old stabbing victim pierced the night. This is the heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family in the making and the wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life.

This copy was won my madmadge in my "Book drawing in honour of my dog Simba".
Simba was nothing like Marley, Simba was calm, almost a bit reserved, very peculiar about his food and company (both dogs and humans).
He was my Forever Dog and I will miss him always.

This book arrived today with a lovely postcard and a message from Sobergirl. I scrolled down to look at your lovely pictures of Simba before I wrote this Sobergirl - he was a lovely little dog and looks full of character. I''m sure you miss him.

By the way - the sweeties in the parcel, are they for human or doggie consumption?

John read this book first and absolutely loved it (and he's not a book reader!). He said it reminded him of his labrador Lady who died before I met him. He read it very quickly and enjoyed every word and, yes, it did make him cry at the end.

Now it's my turn!

I sat up until 1.30am this morning to finish this book with tears rolling down my face. Even to think of the ending now makes my eyes feel damp.

I loved the book and the story of Marley and John Grogan's family even though it was really only a tale of everyday folk. Maybe it's because I can relate to the story a bit and have had some similar experiences.

Our old Smiffy is nearing the end of his life and has some of Marley's symptoms. I think he too is living on borrowed time so the story was all the more poignant. He is nowhere near the same character as Marley. He has always been patient and quiet but he shares Marley's great love of people and food.

Thank you Sobergirl for the chance to read this wonderful book now I have to pick the right person to pass it on to.

Smiffy passed away yesterday so I am offering this book as a further book drawing in his memory. I hope Sobergirl won't mind it carrying on its journey in this way.

It's been posted on to Dusties today the winner of my drawing, an avid dog lover, who has been longing to read this book. Happy reading Dusties!

This book has arrived safe and sound in Central New York. Thank you MadMadge! I make this journal entry thinking of both Smiffy and Simba and all my dogs who are now running with S&S. I look forward to reading this book and have placed it at the top of Mt. TBR. As soon as I finish my current read which is Labrynith, and I'm not doing well. To be honest, I haven't picked up a book to read since early September. This just might be the nudge I need. So for that, I thank you Madmadge!

I hope you both are having a great day! Thanks again to you both for this book! Happy Reading!

What a cute book! I fell in love with Marley and plan on finding the movie 'The Long Run Home' So I can really see him. The end was sad, had me thinking of all my dog's I've loved and lost. I got a lil irritated they didn't take Marley to the Vet's when he fell down the stairs.. the poor guy was obviously hurt. I laughed my hiney off about the tree.. I found myself laughing quite a bit with Marley's antics.
Thanks for a great read MadMadge. I will be sending this book to another bookcrosser.

I got this yesterday, thanks so much. I borrowed this book from the library when it came out, and am so glad to have a copy of my own. Anyone who has ever owned a dog, would have to identify with this book, no matter what the personality of their own dog. And it is always so hard in the end to let go...
