1. Don't be a ray staller! If anyone should stall the ray, I will not hesitate to add that person's name to my private list of scammers and stallers, and I won't do bookcrossing business with you again.

2. Journal the book upon receipt and again when you send it on to the next person.

I''m a little disappointed. The first half of the book went very quickly. Then I got bogged down in the second half. It started to feel repetitious. I really wanted to like this book, felt like I should like this book. Maybe that was part of the problem! I did enjoy it overall, but I''m glad I''m finished.

Just want to let you know that I'm reading this book steadily, but it's not a quick read! I'm about halfway through now and I'm giving it every spare moment I can so I can pass it on.

I enjoyed this book, not in the way I enjoy a real page-turner (which this isn't), but because I learned so much about Brooklyn at the beginning of the 20th century. By the end I'd developed an affection for the main characters and an appreciation of how much easier my life is than theirs.

I mailed the book to lizzy-stardust today. I hope it doesn't take too long to get there!

9 out of 10

It's an appropriate book for me to read since I've just got back from staying with friends in Brooklyn. Of course, Williamsburg, where the book is set, is now full of young hipsters. (I stayed elsewhere in the borough).

I found the book warm and involving and inspiring - it was a tale of beating the odds and how something worthwhile can grow out of the humblest beginnings.

I am sending boirina a PM now.

The book has left for iliotropio today.

I enjoyed reading the book but my reasons were surely opposed to many other people's reasons as I could relate to nothing on the book. I guess that's the magic of books, that you can like a story for completely different reasons. :)

Thanks for sharing!

Finished this one yesterday and I loved it! I agree with the person above who said that the book gives a wonderful picture of Brooklyn in the early 1900s. The actual storyline was rather ordinary, but by the end I felt very involved with the characters and their lives. Does anyone know whether Smith ever wrote a sequel?
Thanks for starting this ray, bluesneak! I'm glad I got the chance to read the book.

Well a book that I loved from the first place until the last page, and the last word. Throughout my reading I became to grow more attached to the story. The main character Francie was an intriguing and delightful creation that anyone would want as their best friend, should she not be a fictional person. I highly recomend it. Well I am waiting for the address of the next person so that the ring will keep on.

This big *wrap* for *Tree* is made after chap. XX1. It is such a poignant memoir. Schoenbaum said "Biography tends towards oblique self-portraiture." However the novel gives such an accurate picture. How do I know? It rings true. We are really enjoying this book.

Journal Entry 26 by playtheman from Rangeville, Queensland Australia on Thursday, November 20, 2008

10 out of 10

It tells of ordinary people facing the difficulties of their life. I eat too fast and I read a bit fast. With *Tree* I'm reading aloud during ironing or meal preparation sessions or as we have a 'cuppa' on the patio (or in a cafe). Thus I have to concentrate on voice production, inflection and emphasis and occasionally hazard an attempt at Brooklyn or Irish patois!
Can I say that no one could but help enjoying this book?

XLV ===> LV ptmette sighed and asked how much more to go? I get tired reading aloud yet we do want to find out how Francie ends her story!
Thanks for sharing, Bluesneak.

I didn't really think I had time to read *Tree* yesterday but we shared the reading over a 'cuppa'. We continue to be impressed with Francie as she attends evening classes. *A Tree Grows in Brooklyn* is one of those books that come along once in a while and you dread the finishing thinking surely nothing can provide the enjoyment of this present book!
When I do finish I plan to wild release if that's ok?
