Book arrived safely yesterday - many thanks!

The odyssey of a boy on a search; at once an arduous journey by bicycle and a desperate journey through the mysteries of the mind to unlock a past that must not be remembered if he is to survive.

I remember not liking this as a child, because it freaked me out so much.

It still was scary, because I know more now about the mind and how it works, and how those in the field can help - or hinder - recovery.

This is a search for the truth, but at the end of the book, are we any closer to that than at the beginning?

Was waiting for me when I got back from holiday...

Thank you :)

Enjoyed this. Interesting how it was put together - I liked how the narrative moves between the first person, the flashbacks and the sessions with the psychiatrist. I think I'd like to re-read this again in the future - I imagine it's one of those books that you pick up more each time you read it.

I have an address for midlifecrisis so will get this in the post tomorrow.

Apologies again, pookledo, for holding the ring up.

Journal Entry 10 by Midlifecrisis from St. Austell, Cornwall United Kingdom on Thursday, February 28, 2008
Safely received today. I will read and keep it moving asap.

Journal Entry 11 by Midlifecrisis from St. Austell, Cornwall United Kingdom on Sunday, March 2, 2008
Wow, one scary story. I wonder how close to reality this actually comes? I am pm'ing the next person and will keep the book moving. Thank you for giving me the chance to read this. Young adult literature is often very immediate isn't it?

Great book - the suspense and mystery surrounding the central character makes you want to keep reading. I found this very disturbing! but it is one which I know I will have to read again. It will be on its way to Tanamo once I have an address. Thanks for sharing this book.

Arrived safely. LadyIndigo01

Journal Entry 16 by Tanamo from Hinckley, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Tuesday, May 13, 2008
Like Ladyindigo I found this book very disturbing and when I finished it I went to sleep and had one of those corridor dreams only this time I wasn't walking down a corridor full of doors, I was riding a bike down a cave-like tunnel with lots of side tunnels. I'm reading junior fiction now for some light relief!!!
I've pm'd Leisha Camden and as soon as I get her address, the book will be on its way.

Mailed to LeishaCamden today.

Journal Entry 18 by wingLeishaCamdenwing from Alna bydel, Oslo fylke Norway on Monday, May 19, 2008
Got this in the mail today. I have some other rings & rays ahead of it (they travel in packs!!) but will read it as soon as I can. I'm really looking forward to it as I remember reading this book many years ago, in Norwegian ... I wouldn't be surprised if it was as long ago as 16-17 years. :-o I don't remember much about it except that it was a totally fascinating book. It'll be great to get the chance to read it in the original language.

I'll journal again when I've read the book.

Journal Entry 19 by wingLeishaCamdenwing from Alna bydel, Oslo fylke Norway on Thursday, August 28, 2008
I've finally gotten around to reading this book! August 4th through 12th. I'm sorry for taking so long with it - rings & rays always travel in packs I'm afraid! but better late than never I hope. :-)

The book has travelled with me: take a look here. :-)

As I said in my first JE I'd already read this book, years and years ago, and in Norwegian. It was interesting to read it in the original, and I didn't remember a lot of the plot after such a long time. Some of it did come back to me as I was reading though ... but not so much so that it ruined the experience. :-) The plot is rather simple and rather complicated at the same time ... from the narrator's viewpoint it's pretty simple, but there is a lot of subtext that the reader picks up on. The author does a good job of keeping the reader guessing ... the big revelation at the end doesn't come as a complete surprise, but I seem to recall that when I read it as a teenager I really was surprised. Maybe because I'd read it before ... but I really do think that there are a lot of clues in the text that I missed the first time. It is a YA book but it works well for adult readers too IMO. It's well written and touching. I'm really glad I got this chance to read it again in the original language. :-)

Thank you for sharing, Pookledo!! I've PMed iliotropio for an address, so hopefully the book will be on the road again soon, finally. :-)

Journal Entry 20 by wingLeishaCamdenwing from Alna bydel, Oslo fylke Norway on Monday, September 1, 2008
Just FYI to everyone: I've heard back from iliotropio and confirmed the address ... but she also told me that she's going back home to Greece for a couple of weeks' visit now, so I'm going to hold on to the book for another week before I send it. That way it will hopefully arrive in Brussels at about the same time that she does. :-)

A different psychological thriller, which leaves room to the reader´s imagination to complete the story.
On its way to Drusillamac. Happy reading!

Journal Entry 25 by Drusillamac from Glasgow, Scotland United Kingdom on Monday, May 18, 2009
Caught this in the post last week but forgot to journal. I am a bad Bookcrosser :( Thanks to iliotropio and Pookledo for sharing.

Journal Entry 26 by Drusillamac from Glasgow, Scotland United Kingdom on Wednesday, July 29, 2009
I wish I had read this book when I was at school. It seems so much cooler than some of the books we were given. The sinister edge is enough to engage even the most stubborn kid. The sections between Adam and his psychiatrist were rather interesting and lead you to believe more darker motives were afoot, such as the DATE DELETED and the tapes being labelled in such a cool way.

This was a cracking read for the morning commute. Thanks to those who shared :)

P.S. Can anyone explain why the last line, and indeed the title, is 'I Am The Cheese'?

Journal Entry 27 by wingLeishaCamdenwing from Alna bydel, Oslo fylke Norway on Wednesday, July 29, 2009
Yes, I can. :-) The title of the book is inspired by the children's rhyme The Farmer in the Dell. This is the rhyme, and reading it I think will make the connection clear to you (especially the last verse):

The farmer in the dell
The farmer in the dell
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The farmer in the dell

The farmer takes a wife
The farmer takes a wife
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The farmer takes a wife

The wife takes a child
The wife takes a child
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The wife takes a child

The child takes a nurse
The child takes a nurse
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The child takes a nurse

The nurse takes a cow
The nurse takes a cow
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The nurse takes a cow

The cow takes a dog
The cow takes a dog
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The cow takes a dog

The dog takes a cat
The dog takes a cat
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The dog takes a cat

The cat takes a rat
The cat takes a rat
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The cat takes a rat

The rat takes the cheese
The rat takes the cheese
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The rat takes the cheese

The cheese stands alone
The cheese stands alone
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The cheese stands alone

You can read more about the rhyme on Wikipedia, here:

Hope that helps, Drusillamac!! Sorry for hijacking the book 'back' again, but I think this may be interesting to future readers as well. :-)

Journal Entry 28 by Drusillamac from Glasgow, Scotland United Kingdom on Monday, December 28, 2009
There have been no claims on this book. Having a bit of book cull so this is going into the charity shop bag. Hope it finds a new reader there :)
