From the backflap:
"Walter Van Brunt is a dreamer, and a lover of drugs, alcohol and speed. He likes nothing better than to fly along on his motorbike, invincible and immortal. But one day, dodging a mysterious shadow on the road, he crashes into a barrier and loses his right foot. Walter is a descendant of Dutch yeomen and since the day of the accident he has been haunted by their ghosts. When he receives a new plastic foot he is determined to find his father who deserted his family years ago, and to uncover the secrets of his ancestors."

I'm a big TC Boyle fan, but his books seem to be a bit hit and miss - some are brilliant and others not so much. This one, "World's End" seems to be a bit inbetween. It took me a long time to really get into the story, or, better said, stories. The book tells three different stories in three different time periods, but they are all connected: the past basically explains a lot about the future and the relationships people have. In that regard it's an interesting look on heredity and the influence of history. It is a bit tough to get a hang of all the different settings & characters at first though, I kept mixing everyone up, but once I understood who was who the book got a lot better. I had to slightly drag myself through the first half of the book, but the second half I finished in a heartbeat. So in the end I am positive about "World's End", but it's still really not as good as some of other TC Boyle books (my favourites, in case you're interested, are "Drop City" and "The Tortilla Curtain").

Thanks, really enjoyed Tortilla Curtain, so am curious about this one.

Thought this was a good book, mixing of people from different times, with their stories finally coming together at the end. Is history destined to repeat itself?
