International Bookring for this book.
"Here is the magical journey of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and into the Egyptian desert where a fateful encounter with the alchemist awaits him."
I read this nearly three years ago. I remember enjoying it but it didn't challenge me as much as The Celestine Prophecy. Looking forward to all your comments.

This book has not been rated.

Two bookcrossing parcels today, I'm spoilt! Thanks for this one, lakelady2282!

I do have a few other bookrings ahead of this one, but given the slimness (and the very large writing) of this one, I might bump it up the list a bit so it can keep on travelling quickly.

3 out of 10

I've grown too cynical in my old age. I loved Jonathan Livingstone Seagull as a teenager, but tried re-reading it a year or two ago for a bookclub and just gave up. It was either that, or throw it across the room in disgust. I should have read this one as a teenager too. (At least I did finish it, and I didn't throw it anywhere in disgust either.)

It was all a bit dogmatic, I felt that I should have been taking notes on all the Life Lessons it tried to teach me (follow your dream; listen to your heart; follow your dream; listen to your heart; being alive is more important than money; follow your dream; listen to your heart). It was like being smothered in new age aspirational posters. And I felt cheesed off that because I wasn't getting into it, I was probably being dismissed as someone who wasn't following their dream (like the crystal merchant).

Great, a novel is dissing me.

When I got to the end of the book, I thought "well, that was interesting, one of those books where the protagonist didn't have a name", only to read the back of the book and discover the boy did have a name, they just didn't use it after a while. So my one point of interest wasn't even a real point.

Eh, I just don't think I'm the parable type.

I've got stubee's address already, so shall pop this in the post next time I'm at the post office. I hope he's less cynical than me! And I hope he appreciates the women's health bookmark that I'm leaving in the book too. :) Happy reading!

Just popping my head in to let the remainder of you guys know that this actually isn''t a 1001 book. I''m not sure how I got mixed up but two other titles of the authors are but not The Alchemist. If anyone wants to pull out that''s fine. Sorry for the confusion.

It's arrived I'll get onto this shortly. Cheers lakelady2282 :-)

EDIT 04/09/07: As KT-J and I are swamped with rings/rays and this isn't a 1001 book we're going to skip this and send it out to GateGypsy.

Arrived in the mail today. It will take me a while to get to this, but I am very eager to get to it! I have been wanting to read this book for years now, so I'm incredibly grateful to be part of this ring! Thanks for sharing, lakelady2282. Seriously.

Starting this book today!

**********************
Sorry, I forgot to journal this when I finished reading it. It was lovely! Poetic! Evocative. Not ... earth shattering. I "already knew" a lot of what the author was sharing, but it was wonderfully affirming.

It's in the post as of August 12

This was an ok book but not one I will remember. The story seemed too thin and not very motivating to read.
