After trying to read Wicked and Lost, I have come to the conclusion that Maguire's writing style is just not to my liking. I will be saving this book for my husband.

Actually, I was on a ring for this book, and it got stalled, so I have decided to resurrect the ray, and try sending this on. I have PM'd most everyone, and am awaiting replies -- I was unable to reach the orignator of the ring, uofigirl, so I am just hoping she doesn't mind me poaching her ray. Here is a link to the original, stalled 4/17/07, Mirror, Mirror

ED:11/16/08:Hope to get this going soon, I will be happy to add any of the folks from the original ring if I hear back from them, or if anyone on here knows them-and can get a hold of them. So, please check the list before sending out the book. If they are striked (stroke?) through, I have heard from them and they are no longer interested. Will update again when the book is on the way!!

Journal Entry 6 by Lisagt from Holsworthy, New South Wales Australia on Saturday, January 24, 2009
Home now so I will be able to contact jellycat for an address and get the ring moving again. As to the book, I really enjoyed this one. It was fun to find the references to Snow White but the story was in no way just a retelling. Very clever to involve the notorious Borgias. I know a little about their history but am now interested to look up more. BTW I liked this Maguire better than Wicked! Thanx for sharing...

This was an interesting retelling of Snow White. I also liked this one better than Wicked.

The book is on its way to CheriePie now.

This arrived yesterday and I hope to be able to read it soon, though I do have a few review books I need to read first. I'm actually in the middle of packing and moving from Boston to Bay Area, California so my reading has been a bit slow, but I hated to pass up the opportunity to get this ring since it was already lost/stalled once, and I was on another that also got stalled. So I know I'll definitely need to hang on to it longer than a month, but hopefully less than three, before I get to it. I hope that's okay. I think Innae knows me and knows that I'm a reliable bookcrosser. I kept out certain books that aren't being packed but are traveling with me in the RV, and won't go into any type of short term storage (since we still need to find a house out in California), so this will be one of the books that's kept with me and thus shouldn't get lost in the shuffle of packing.

Thanks for restarting this ring in any case, and I'm looking forward to delving into the realm of Snowy White very soon! :P

I am finally starting to read this, and I'm sorry it has taken me so long. I mentioned my cross-country move in a previous post but while my life was getting settled here, I hardly read much at all. So I just wanted to note here that I should have this book moving again within the next month.

The year is 1502, and seven-year-old Bianca de Nevada lives perched high above the rolling hills and valleys of Tuscany and Umbria at Montefiore, the farm of her beloved father, Don Vicente. But one day a noble entourage makes its way up the winding slopes to the farm -- and the world comes to Montefiore.

In the presence of Cesare Borgia and his sister, the lovely and vain Lucrezia -- decadent children of a wicked pope -- no one can claim innocence for very long. When Borgia sends Don Vicente on a years-long quest, he leaves Bianca under the care -- so to speak -- of Lucrezia.

She plots a dire fate for the young girl in the woods below the farm, but in the dark forest salvation can be found as well ...

A lyrical work of stunning creative vision, Mirror Mirror gives fresh life to the classic story of Snow White -- and has a truth and beauty all its own.

I had a difficult time making it through this one. The pace was pretty slow all the way through, and the dialog and phrasing would often set my mind to wandering so next thing I knew, I wasn't even comprehending what I was reading. That's usually a strong indicator that I'm pretty bored, which sadly I have to say that I was throughout most of this book. :( I decided to plod through anyway. Perhaps it was because I enjoyed Wicked so much--both the book and the theater production--that I thought Mirror Mirror would eventually get there too, but alas it did not, and I was left feeling that my time could've been better spend with my nose in the next Sookie book which has been lying in wait on my night stand. :)

The reason I'm not giving this book a lesser rating is that even though I didn't enjoy it, I still felt that the author himself is a good writer. I didn't find myself criticizing the story itself as I was reading as I do with other books with really bad writing. So just because this book wasn't my cup of tea, and I'm sure others will agree that it's a bit slow-paced, there may be others who enjoy it a lot more than I too.

I will be contacting the next participant shortly and get this in the mail in the next couple weeks.

Book is here. I'm looking forward to it, as I have really enjoyed the other Gregory Maguire books I've read.
One book to finish before I can start this one, however!
