One of the least known periods of European history has been vivdly reconstructed by Barbara Bartos-Hoppner in this brilliant evocation of the life of the Norwegian Vikings in the ninth century.
The story follows the fortunes of Bjorn the shipbuilder, and the people of Einarshof in Southern Norway. Bjorn has made many successful raiding trips in Northern Europe in the company of his father, but he dreams of building a ship which can sail anywhere on the high seas, and will not need to hug the coasts like the old-fashioned ships his father owns. It takes many years for his controversial ideas to be accepted, but after various delays and disasters Bjorn is finally able to set sail for the legendary enticing South in a ship which is to become the prototype for later generations of Viking shipbuilders.
