[from the back of the book] A young woman in love with a man torn between his love for her and his incorrigible womanizing; one of his mistresses and her humbly faithful lover-these are the two couples whose story is told in this masterful novel. Kundera''s first since "The Book of Laughter and Forgetting." In a world in which lives are shaped by irrevocable choices and by fortuitous events, a world in which everything occurs but once, existence seems to lose its substance, its weight. Hence, we feel "the unbearable lightness of being" not only as the consequence of our private actions, but also in the public sphere, and the two inevitably intertwine.

I found this book a little bit hard to read and follow. Even though, the subject is quite interesting and I'm sure there are people somewhere who will like it more than me!

Thanks so much.Book arrived today along with about 15 others so I must be the April Smile Day Sweepstakes winner. This is so exciting, all those books from all over the world and no two the same. Bookcrossing is the best hobby.
This looks like an interesting read. The Quebec postcards are beautiful, will add to my collection, they are the first postcards I've gotten from Quebec. Sending 2 books is so generous of you. Thanks.

A sensitive and thought-provoking book which will have me pondering the philisophical questions and ideas raised. Kundera uses the characters Tomas, Tereze, Sabrina and Franz and the Soviet invasion of Czechoslavakia to explore life and all aspects of human existance. The role of fate, choice, love, relationships, and events on our life and development. In this one life of ours what creates the heaviness or lightness of our being.
It's easy to understand why this book is part of so many BCers PC. I'll reserve it for now, I want to re-read it and spend more time absorbing the topic.

Thank you ! It arrived safely. Along with the most beautiful Canadian bookplate.
I look forward to reading it.
Mtbr got a little high, but I'm ploughing through it.
This book is one everyone should read / 've read, guess it deserves its place on the 1001 - list ! but somehow I never got around to reading it myself before. I think it was a case of mental lazyness. Well, no more excuse now.... ;) but I'm sure I'll love it.

Oh gosh, I held onto this book for way too long.
I made a list of all books that are in my hands since 2011 and I'm reading those first.
I did not really fell in love with this book like most of my friends and most other reviewers did.
I guess I found it quite difficult and a bit hard to read ... :))))
Guess I agree with Carelaisa.
Will make sure it continues it's travels soon though !

Look at how well-travelled this book is! Awesome.

I honestly can't remember if I've read this book before or not. I have a vague memory of starting and not finishing it, but I intend to give it another go.

I picked this book up at the New Year's meeting in Amsterdam, courtesy of Kafka 1954!

I may once have started reading this book and have given up on it, as initially I found the book hard to get into. Eventually I kind of warmed to the melancholical and philosophical part of it, but I kept mixing up the different characters and wondering who was who. Why don't writers just pick one storyline and stick with it?

However, I've finished the book and I enjoyed parts of it. I'll pass it on to Grittie, let's see what she says;-)
