"In 1931, Joanna Lumley's grandparents undertook a 3 1/2 month journey across the small and secret Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, to honour the King with the award of Knight Commander of the Indian Empire. Captivated by their journals, films and photographs, Joanna retraces their steps to meet the King's descendents and to discover for herself the charm of this forgotten land."
This is a beautiful book, similar to the Michael Palin travel journals. Made to accompany the BBC series, it has interesting text, amusing drawings and some beautiful photographs. A fascinating country is brought to life through this journey, with insights into Joanna and her travelling companions and how things have changed - or not - between the 1931 expedition and Joanna's trip in 1993.
