Journal Entry 3 by Hendrickje from Amsterdam, Noord-Holland Netherlands on Saturday, September 15, 2007
Already today, Saturday, I received The Subtle Knife, which was sent away on Monday by DrSlump612 all the way from the USA. That is quick! And I say Hurray! because after having read part 1 of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials, I have been wondering how the story will unfold in this part 2. The book looks very pretty with a somewhat creepy cover and BC-stickers and BC-stamps all over!;-) Thank you very much, DrSlump612!

A thrilling story, this alleged children's book, thank you again, DrSlump612! While telling a wonderful story, Mr Pullmann does not hesitate to deal with some challenging issues, like corruption in the field of scientific research and the so-called 'Defence' which 'only looks for new and better ways to kill people'. Then there is the issue of the Church. I think Pullmann's view on this institution is summarised quite well in the next quote, by the Witch Queen: "It is the Magisterium, the church. For all it's history -and that's not long by our lives, but it's many, many of theirs- it's tried to suppress and control every natural impulse. And when it can't control them, it cuts them out. (...)That is what the church does, and every church is the same: control, destroy, obliterate every good feeling". The Subtle Knife leaves us in the very middle of the plot, so I can't wait to move on to The Amber Spyglass!
