"The three books of Sigrid Undset's Kristin Lavrandsdatter triology stand as a landmark in European literature, and are acknowledged as the masterpiece of this Nobel-Prize-winning noelist.
Relating the fortunes of the eponymous heroine's tempestuous life, the triology brilliantly portrays the full richness of her extraordinary character - beautiful, strong-willed, passionate - and re-creates with breathtaking vision the world of fourteenth-century Norway."

One of the classics of Norwegian literature, going as a RABCK to a friend in the UK.

I hope you enjoy it!

Wow - what a surprise came through my letter box this morning. I can't thank you enough Haugtussa - this does indeed meet my criteria of reading "more classics" in 2008. Not only that, but my goal to read more history and my fondness for foreign writers. What you don't know is that I set myself a personal goal (unpublished) to read at least one book of 1000 pages. Last year I completed War & Peace - this year Kristin Lavransdatter's Trilogy? I must confess to not having heard of this so I'm really excited to get into this Nobel Prize winner. Thank you so very much.

Just a quick update...

I have been reading this on and off for the best part of 6 months now around my studying and work commitments - hence the inactivity of the book, but this is truly a remarkable read and one that I will be journalling shortly as I now only have about 250 pages or so left - ideal hopefully for finishing on the last few remaining days of the Christmas/New Year holiday break I currently enjoy before the studying starts up again. Watch this space:-)

Finally I have finished this book and what an enjoyable, if somewhat long, read it has been. I have been totally immersed in the life of Kristin. The characters are all so brilliantly brought to life together with their surroundings but I have also immersed myself into the Norwegian countryside - weaving clothing, making ale and skiing cross country as in the times of old - a wonderful Nobel prize winning book with some very useful notes at the end explaining a lot of the terms.

Thank you Haugtussa. I will probably offer this in the forum as a book ray to hopefully catch those who enjoy a 1000 pages plus challenge and also those taking part in the Nobel Prize winners challenge.

Am keeping this ray small as the book is quite long....

Running order will be...

lucy-lemon (UK)
ChrissyHam (Netherlands)
Totje2 (Netherlands)
Hayes13 (Italy)

Hayes 13 - sorry to have you last but at least you have the satisfaction of deciding what to do with the book after it's travels! All, I hope you enter into the spirit of the ray and don't hold onto this for too long, despite its length, which can be off putting for some - trust me the book is worth it!

lucy-lemon, I am PMing you for your address today...

Posted to lucy-lemon today to start off this Bookray. Happy travels big book.

Apologies - I seem to have released this book at its destination rather than departure place. I'm not sure how to change this ....

For the record, I posted this from Knaphill Post Office, just outside Woking in Surrey. Sorry:-(

This actually arrived a couple of days ago, but I have had a friend visiting so I haven't had a chance to get online. Thank you for sending it to me! I'm finishing off The Recognitions (another massive bookring) at the moment, but then this will be top of the list.

Well. I've finally finished Kristin Lavransdatter. It seemed to take me ages to read, but I think that was because I tended to read one of the books of the trilogy and then read something inbetween. I really, really liked the first two books, The Bridal Garland and The Cross. I wasn't too sure about Mistress of Husaby, I really struggled to get through it at some points. It's made me really interested in finding out more about Norway's history, so that's definitely something I'm going to be looking into. Thank you so much for sharing this book with me :-)

I received the book today, and must admit I'm slightly daunted by the sheer size of it - over a 1000 pages and even that with small type. But I am looking forward to it, and as I've nearly finished the book I'm reading I should get to it soon - but I anticipate it might take a while to finish!

Thanks so much for sharing!

Just a little update - it's March the 7th and I've read 2 or the 3 books of the trilogy, I'm enjoying it more than I was expecting to after the first few pages. However, I'm going to have a little break and read a couple of other books before tackling the final book of this one as I have had a glut of book rays drop through the door within the last couple of weeks and I'd also like to keep them moving too.

Finally finished this massive book. Like Lucy, I enjoyed the first 2 books considerably more than the last one (the cross), which was by far the longest of the 3 and I felt could easily have been 200 pages shorter. I'm glad to have read this book as it was well written. Thanks for offering it as a ray as I don't think it is something that I ever would have seen in the shop and felt compelled to buy.

Arrived safely today! Thanks for sending, ChrissyHam.
There are several bookrings waiting to be read (why do they all arrive in clusters!!?? :-( but I'll do my best to read it as quickly as possible.
Looking forward to this one, it has been a while since I read a historical novel / (fictive) biography.

I finally got to this book.
The number of pages did not frighten me, so I started with high expactations. BUT... much to my shame I must admit tht I did not get through. Like all books that I have difficulties with, I gave it about 100 pages, but even that did not help.
The language was strange to me (older English is harder to read for me), my span of concentration is not too large at the moment and, quite opposite to what I expected, I did not really find it interesting.

So, I must admit *shame*, *blush* that this one goes on the abandoned books list of 2010. Sorry...

One year later and I am finally reading this. I do apologize for the delay.

When I have finished my "Group Read" (I'm reading along with 2 3 virtual buddies) I will either start a new ray, or do a RABCK or similar.

Thank you again for giving me the option of waiting to read this. I really appreciate it.
