This is a chilling description of a dystopian near future where genetic modification, once a way of life, has destroyed almost all humans. The lone voice telling his tale, attempting to piece together what happened, is "Snowman." Back when he was a student called Jimmy, he befriended a talented scientist who would grow up to be Crake. Oryx is a girl from a South-East Asian country, initially forced into prostitution but who ends up as an intermediary between Crake and his new creations. The Children of Crake are a modified human race of innocent people with all the most practical features of the animal kingdom spliced into them so they've survived to holocaust. Snowman attempts to guide them, but is dying of starvation and desperately trying to reach the compound they came from.
This emotionally stunted world of commercialism and pornography, where vast corporations are just as evil as our conspiracy theorists would have us believe, is well described - a bleak warning of a perfectly possible future. It's one that I was glad to have read, although I'm marking it down simply because I far prefer Atwood's books about female characters such as Cat's Eye.

Picked this up at my first Perth BC Meetup today. Had a good time and was very pleased to meet freesia as well :-) I've been on a bit of a Margaret Atwood spree this year, so am looking forward to add 'Oryx and Crake' to my list!
I really enjoyed this book - Atwood has created a richly detailed world and an absorbing story that unfolds beautifully. Like freesia, I was always aware that the book did not have a female protagonist, which did boggle a bit. However, the book's commentary on science, politics and gender it still extremely thought provoking and so very pleasurable to read.
