I collected this book at the March BookCrossing Meeting. This needs to be a Book-Ring book so that it doesn't go out of BookCrossing circulation since it was written by on of our own Tulsa BookCrossing members. I'll be sure to journal when I finish and promise NOT to keep it. (If I like it, I'll actually go out and buy it).

This is the type of book that you don't want to admit that you loved. Reading it was a guilty pleasure. I knew I was going to enjoy reading Fara's book when I saw the quote from her mother: "I always worried about Fara, locking herself up in her room for hours, making up lies and writing them down. It's a bit shameful if you ask me. Hope something good comes of this." And it did! What a wonderfully inventive book!

THAT HURT THING is the story of a young man named Nick who finds a curious book in a used bookstore. He is immediately drawn to it's foil cover emblazoned with a scorpion and tulip and to its haunting prose inside. He becomes obsessed with the book and follows the directions within to procure a beautiful seductress and genie named Lyra. As with your average genie, Lyra sets out to fulfill three wishes for Nick. Unfortunately for Nick, Lyra is pure evil and fills his life with nothing but living nightmares.

Fara uses beautiful detail in her writing. It's just enough detail to make you feel like you're in the book, but not so much that you want to skip paragraphs. The book is very dark book and Lyra is the embodiment of evil. I did find myself having a weird nightmare after reading one of the strange, spacey dreams Nick has in the book under Lyra's influence. Regardless, I could not put the book down for long and found myself reading at speeds I've never before reached so that I could finish it before the sun peaked back up over the horizon. I can't wait to read Fara's next book.

Thank you for joining the THAT HURT THING BookRing. First, here’s a brief Explanation just so that we don’t have miscommunications and lost books along the way. The book should pass from BookCrosser to BookCrosser in the order listed below. Once you receive the book, please follow these directions:
1) Make a journal entry when you receive the book. Try to read the book within two to three weeks so that we can keep it moving.
2) Please leave something IN the book. Postcards may not be a good idea since this will prevent us from being able to send it cheaply using Media Mail (available in USA only). However, feel free to write, draw, or glue stickers or photos inside. You can use the inside cover and blank pages/spaces in the book. Be creative and add a bit of your city or country to the book.
3) Upload a photo of your country/city in the journal entry if you have one available.
4) Send a PM to the next person in line for the book and ask for their postal mailing address. Be sure to check the list before sending it in case it has changed any. If the person doesn’t reply to you or you have other problems, just PM me and I’ll see if I can resolve the problem for you. The book should start and end with me.
5) In the USA, send by Media Mail (cheaper than regular mail) to the next recipient on your list. This book (originally) weighed 14 ounces.

Here’s the BookRing order. Click the name to visit their BookShelf or the PM link to send a message:

Released on Saturday, June 07, 2003 at BookRing in Tulsa, Oklahoma USA.

I know everyone was waiting to get this book in the mail. But, alas, I haven't been able to make it to the post office during window hours. I could list excuses a mile long, but I'll spare everyone the agony of having to read them.

Anyhow, I hope everyone enjoys the book. Finally, it's off into the world to make Fara famous. I just ask that, if you like the book, tell your friends about it and maybe even review it on Amazon.com so that Fara can get the publicity she deserves.

Definitely a very different kind of book. It took me a while to get into it, but once I did, I got caught up in it. Still not really sure if it was my cup of tea, but very imaginative.

I'm passing it on today to the next person on the list, EarthAngel. Enjoy!

I just received this book today from EarthAngel, and I can't wait to get started! Thanks everyone!

***I've finished the book because I couldn't put it down! What a great ending. I'm passing this off to Seven7, the next person in the ring.

Literally passed to me by Wicked Lady..... It's next in the "to read" pile.

***Not a bad book! I enjoyed reading about Halifax, walking around town and tracing Nick's steps. I am going to take a snapshot of what, I think, was Chloe's "house".

On to the next 'Crosser!

I think an earlier entry about "guilty pleasure" sums this book up very well! I found it curioulsy gripping and I defintely gulped it down pretty fast. I also thought it was creepy and had odd dreams last night after finishing it. I found the story imaginitive but not very well developed - it just wasn't really clear what caused all this chain of events to happen, but I guess at the speed things were happening, plausibility didn't matter much. Anyway, it was lots of fun. Nick was a likeable character, though he should have figured out what was up way sooner, since we all sure could and I enjoyed the Halifax setting! Good luck, Fara and thanks for a great readig experience!
