Alkuteoksesta Thursday's Child (1970) suomentanut Kristiina Rikman

Pienenä luin Torstain lapsen vaikka kuinka monta kertaa. Nyt minulla on yksi kappale pysyväiskokoelmassani ja tämä on kolmas kappale, jonka vapautan. Yksi aiemmista vapautuneista kirjoista on jo löytynyt; voit lukea sen vaiheista täältä.

Tällaiset tarinat ovat aina niin ihania ja tässä oli vielä jotain niin söpöä, kun kyse oli reippaasta ja sanovasta tytöstä, eikä mistään pikkurääpäleestä, hih.

For some reason, I never discovered the Margaret books as a child. I probably would've been none the more impressed if I had.

Noel Streatfeild's (1895-1986) popular books often portray children struggling and finding careers in the arts. Granted, melodramatic runaway adventures in a variety of exciting settings rarely do the trick for an adult reader. Everything here draws rather too heavily from the tradition of the great children's classics and too transparently dances attendance to its young readers. The general taste at the time of publication, 1970, would not have favored such outlandishly romantic themes; the cynic in me points to the character of the strong-willed Margaret and her market potential. The story was made into a BBC drama series in 1972.

For a children's thriller with a decidedly old-fashioned flair, Thursday's Child has all the right settings: the vicarage, the sadistical orphanage, the village school, the great estates of Sedgecombe Place, the canal, the theater. Stereotypical characters also abound in an attempted Dickensian style: good Hannah, the evil Matron, hearty Mamma Smith, the demimondish Mr. & Mrs. Fortescue... The novel comes to an end with a rather hasty closure, and the 10-year-old Margaret's glorious fate seems sealed the moment she enters the stage as Little Lord Fauntleroy. Cathartically enough, the mysteries of the children's hidden past and lineage are revealed. Then again, the plot uses clumsy and implausible devices from the beginning. Ugh :-P

What is admirable in Streatfeild's technique is omission and minimal narration. Plenty of room is left for the reader's imagination in the brief sketches outlining the children's life at the orphanage and Lavinia's everyday at Sedgecombe Place. I can very well see Thursday's Child as an endless source of roleplay and fascination.

The sequel to Thursday's Child would semi-explanatorily be titled Far to Go. I am curious enough to go seek it in the library.

Kirja löytyi Metson ala-aulan vaihtohyllystä. Olen viime aikoina lukenut paljon vanhempia lastenkirjoja eli siinä 20-30 vuotta vanhoja, joten tottakai nappasin tämän mukaan. :) Missä lie kirja matkustellut tämän neljä kuukautta, mutta nyt ainakin Nokialla. :)
